Does anyone know anything about Tenessee Temple University (TTU)? Does anyone have any experience with this university? Thanks for your input.

I'm right in the middle of a D.Min. (Expository Preaching) with them. I've got a handle on the school with regard to current things and recent history. What would you like to know?

I look forward to your comments PilgrimPastor. I got my BA in Bible in '76 from Temple and did a semester of seminary there, but I'm out of touch and would like to know what is going on myself. I have relatives there but would rather hear from a current student. In particular, is it true that TTU is now SBC? Thanks.

By the way, you may have taken courses from my uncle, Dr. Roger Martin. Good man.

I just spoke through email to an official at the school and he wrote this "... "Affiliated" can be either official or unofficial. Officially, we are not yet affiliated with the SBC, although official affiliation is certainly the intent of the administration..."

TTU has been approved, as I understand it, to have a booth at the annual meeting. I am having a great experience with the school. I have your uncle for an upcoming course in just a few weeks. The online and DE of the school functions very much like it does at Liberty. In fact, a recent professor I had for an online course also teaches courses for Liberty Seminary.

    DMedly,

If you would like to send me your contact information (email is fine), I just spoke to an official at the school through email and he will gladly contact you to answer any (all) of your questions. PM me here or email me through my website at www.chrissurber.com

I really appreciate you're checking on this. Thanks! It's good to have up-to-date information from your alma mater. I gave up on the alumni website. Last I checked, the news section was way out of date.

I've never taken online courses from either, but I took seminary courses in 1986 and 1993. The ties between the schools go way back, seeing that I took an apologetics module in '93 taught by Gary Habermas of Liberty.

I think you'll enjoy Dr. Martin. He's a good teacher. I took a course from him at Temple Seminary in 1976 and still use the notes.

    PilgrimPastor,

I am looking at TTU's MDiv program and was curious to know what your overall experience with the school has been. Since my initial posting, I have initiated contact with the school and I must admit that I am overly impressed. The TTU rep that I spoke to informed me that the seminary degree programs are stackable. He recommended that I start with the Master of Ministry program and progress forward, in order to have short range goals to achieve along the way.

Only one or two undergrad schools are strictly "SBC" in that their trustees are elected by the messengers of the SBC. Some schools' trustees are elected in part or whole by a state convention (say, Clear Creek in Kentucky or Union in Tennessee). Tn Temple is not related in any way to the Tennessee Baptist Convention.

So is the approval process still ongoing, or was it unsuccessful or abandoned?

Its a solid program all the way around. I got your email and I will will it along to the Dean of the Seminary, who encouraged me to do so. It is TRACS accredited, which is the only thing, in my understanding at least, that could be a matter of concern for you if you are desirous of doing doctoral work at an ATS accredited seminary. I don't know that for sure; it is just a question that you may want to ask, though I suspect that wouldn't be an issue in most cases and besides, all schools at that level will want to "weigh you in the balance."

Several seminary degrees can be completed online and the "stackable" nature of the degrees is very nice to earn degrees along the way toward a long M.Div. program can be very encouraging personally and establish some credibility for ministry opportunities along the way as well.

The school, at least the Distance Education that I have done, is very similar to Liberty but it is smaller and as such, you can know the faculty and administration in a way that is tougher at such a large school like Liberty. The president of the school (Dr. Danny Lovett) is the former president of Liberty Seminary. He's interesting... the professors are GREAT.

I highly recommend it. One thought is that they are great for your Master Degree(s) and then Liberty has a little wider range of options for doctoral work, should you decide to pursue. An M.Div. from Temple (plus an Master of Ministry and Master of Biblical Studies along the way) is a great choice in my opinion.

As far as I understand it, the process is ongoing.

    PilgrimPastor,

I just wanted to thank you and everyone else who responded to my initial posting. I am a little hesitant about going back to school after so many years; especially now that I am married with two kids and working full-time (rotating shifts), but God's way is the only way. I'm looking forward to seeing what He has planned for me. Good luck with your studies.
