Should women be given "handicap plates" for parking?

I had to vote other. In my area we have "young family" parking spots that are reserved for pregnant women and families with little children. Most people respect them and leave the spots empty (more even than the handicapped spots!)

There are circumstances when a pregnant woman might need a handicap spot. Not all babies come easy and sometimes while gestating a woman is told to stay off her feet and not walk long distances any more than necessary in order to prevent problems from arising.

However, most of the time, even in the later months, walking is good exercise even when only going from the car to the store.

 

I think it's a sweet gesture for stores to have those spots. Not everyone has family or church members who give a rip about them. I went into labor around 27 weeks with my third and it would have been great to not have to walk more than needed.

Making it legalized just for pregnancy is silly though. Pregnancy isn't an illness. I was doing aerobics all the way up to the end with my first pregnancy. Why would anyone WANT to take up space a woman with a troubled pregnancy or a disability could be using?

And for Pete's sake, quit flippin' regulating everything and give humans the chance to act like decent human beings on their own!

When I was pregnant, I was so thankful for Walmart because they had "stork" parking at that time. I had all kinds of problems during pregnancy and had to stay off my feet most of the time. The stork parking enabled me to park close enough to the store entrance, walk a few steps to the motorized store scooters and sit on one, then get my shopping done. Without that parking and the scooters, I wouldn't have been able to go shopping at all.

 

I'm OK with it but most of the stores around here already have parking for pregnant women.

 

I agree. Leave it up to the stores to decide. Many stores also have on-line shopping now, which makes life much easier for some of us!

A funny story--once when I was expecting, I was getting ready to park in the stork parking spot, when a middle aged man in a truck coming the other way thought he'd take the spot. That is, until he saw me pointedly staring at him. He knew he'd been caught and wisely decided to let me have the spot instead. I was wearing my "I'm-pregnant-and-crabby-so-don't-mess-with-me-face.":laugh:

 

Yes, but only upon the doctor's advice. Pregnancy is not a disability, but complications may lead to fatigue of difficulty walking.

 

Nope. It doesn't make her handicapped, it just means she has to keep a closer eye on the kids since she can't chase them very well.

I don't think pregnancy by itself should deserve a handicapped tag, but if the mom is having complications, she could ask her doctor for a temporary tag recommendation. That would eliminate the need for stork parking.
