I know that my Miles ancestors came from the village of Llanfinangel Helygen in Radnorshire in the 18th Century, going to Pennsylvania and Delaware. One of my ancestors, Richard Miles, was instrumental in the founding of what is now called the Old Welsh Tract Baptist Church in Newark, Delaware.

Did you know that the whole tract of land Pa, Del & parts of NJ were supposed to be dedicated to the Welsh people as William Penn's grandfather was Welsh & many of them shunned the Kings Religion in favor of Non-conformity faiths? Penn wanted to name the tract of land Welsh Land but London would not allow it & told him to name it Pennsylvania. My own ancestors, the Llywelyn's, Garretts, Davis / Davies, Jones's etc began coming here & populated all of Pennsylvania & parts of Delaware & W. Va as Baptists & Welsh Calvinist Methodists. I'm told that they built their Churches before their own homes & that they considered it the height of hospitality to serve in one another's churches in order to get them established. I have an ancestor who was an itenerent preacher who worked 6 days in the mines & on sabbath walked 20-30 miles officiating at all the Welsh churches in the area....He could both read & speak both Welsh & English so was in demand as a translator.

My one granddaughter was born on Dewi Sant day. We have no excuse not to remember both, and she has the whole history of David, even as an American.

    Cheers,

    Jim
