We've been following this because we are sailors as well and this is hubby's dream to sail around the world. It's well known that those waters have pirates and many sailors either avoid the area or else bring firearms for protection.

    I'm praying for their families.

I keep seeing two sides to the story.

One side claims they were missionaries handing out Bibles in one of the most dangerous part of the world for Americans and Christians.

The other side says they were rich adventurers sailing around the world on a luxury yacht.

So either they were courageous servants of God in a lawless, dangerous mission field, or they were very foolish tourists flaunting their wealth before violent criminals.

I prefer to give them some benefit of the doubt.

While it seems like they might be flaunting their wealth, there are a LOT of people who cruise full time and live on their boats. A 58 foot boat is large and theirs was very nice but that is a typical size for a blue water sailer. Our boat is 42 feet and the same model has circumnavigated but many of the boats that do so are larger (it IS your home, after all). I do not see them at all as "very foolish tourists". I can show you at least hundreds of people who do the same thing every day. But unfortunately, pirates are still a fact of life in that area and the reason many avoid sailing there.

Yep. From that link, it says: "There are currently around 30 boats captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia, a total of more than 600 people being held hostage, according to a US Navy spokesman." It happens a lot more than we know.

He certainly rewards those who do what He has called them to do in spite of knowing the dangers involved. What you call an idiot. God calls obedient disciples.

Why do you say this? MANY sailors sail in the area. It's not a suicide mission but it is a bit more dangerous. But I think you are quite overexaggerating things.

Can you show me one verse in the Bible where God spoke against someone spreading the Gospel - even if it meant walking into death? I don't recall any passages like that.

Well, you've "rewarded" us with yet another "nugget" of "wisdom."

Not surprising you'd have resentment and contempt for people doing things that honor God. Best-case scenario: You do so out of a guilty conscience.

There are other, sadder possibilities, but that's between you and God.

Sometimes, your posts frustrate and anger me.

But times like this...I just think it's sad. Folks pass out Bibles, are slaughtered by animalistic thugs...and you call them "idiots."

Speaks more to your character than anything else.

As Christians, we have a responsibility to pray for our enemies.

As a sovereign nation, I think it's time to exterminate some pirates.

Comment reported. There's no reason for comments like this about people that might have died as Christian martyrs.

I don't know what went on in the time that the pirates were on the boat but they certainly were not targeted because of being Christians. It COULD be that their witnessing bothered the pirates and so they were shot but pirates abound in that area and go for the boats - not the people. So I would not say they were martyrs because they were pirated and killed but they COULD be because of their sharing their faith while in the presence of the pirates.

Thank goodness, the Apostles such as Peter, were not rewarded as an idiot.

They were rich folk who retired and decided to serve God with their time and money. I read that one man retired early from being a Hollywood assistant producer, then went to Fuller Seminary to learn to serve God.

You know there's being provocative and there's just being ignorant.

Since you constantly seem to be the latter you are now on ignore. Good day.

From what I've read this was a faithful couple who decided to devote their twlight years to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Theirs is a testimony of faithfulness for which I am thankful.

Some people use their yatchs to find secluded breaches and exotic locales, they used theirs to plant seeds of the Gospel.

I was reading that the vast majrity of Somali Pirates *are* Muslims...

If this be the case their fate was sealed as soon as they were boared...

And, the pirates only held off long enough in an attempt to blame the Navy on their deaths...

I am sorry to say that the only sure cure for Piracy is to blow them out of the water as soon as they approach a vessel after being warned off. This is whether weapons are seen or not.

And, if captured, no trial for piracy, immediate hanging from a yardarm, spar or other suitable piece of gear.

And, to ensure they no the true cost and to prevent vain martyrdom...

Plenty of pig fat sun block!
