The Canadian family of a 13-month-old boy teetering on life support has defied a court order to remove the boy’s breathing tube and now are looking to an American hospital for what experts say would be a miracle recovery.

The boy, Joseph Maraachli, has been in a vegetative state at a hospital in London, Ontario, since last fall. He’s been treated for a neurodegenerative disease that doctors ruled leaves no hope for the boy.

A Superior Court judge, in turn, ordered that Maraachli’s breathing tube be removed on Monday. But his family refused, insisting that the boy be released to his family’s care, according to CBC News. The family says removing the ventilator would promise an agonizing death for the boy. They asked that doctors at least perform a tracheotomy that would allow Joseph to die at home, but the Canadian hospital has refused.

Poor kid. Shame on the judge and the system that would be so cold!

If I were the boy I would want them to pull the plug.

God can perform a miracle just as readily in Canada as in the States.

I'm no fan of C.T.Boy, but this is kind of a hypocritical statement, made by a guy who refused to join the service because the drill instructor might be mean to him.

Nice of you to take my words (from what, 2 years ago?) out of context. My point at that time was that I wouldn't work any job where my boss yelled, screamed, and cursed at me. I've never refused to join the service because of that issue in particular. I have a hundred other reasons why I (me personally, I respect the service of others greatly) wouldn't join the service.

My comment to Crabby was a joke. I'm sorry if I offended Crabby and others with my joke. Please accept my apologies.

Matt, actually I was not offended. I was rather amused.

My meaning in my first post in this thread was I do not want any extreme measures used to keep me alive. I have that written into my will and into my advanced directive. I am not afraid of death .... but there are some processes that I do not like, and if I have one of those diseases I do not want my life prolonged artificially or unnecessarily. I have requested that I be kept as comfortable as possible, but, as I said, not kept alive artificially.

Matt, I am old enough and have seen enough and have heard enough that it takes a lot to upset or offend me. I am secure in my belief and relationship with Christ.

Black print on a computer screen does not always carry meaning well.

    Blessings.

Crabby is a good sport. I'll give him that. I too do not want any advanced life support when it is quite evident that my quality of life is not going to be good. Plus, if it is meant for me to live then I would with or without the mechanical help. But, in the case of this child he is not able to speak for himself. Mom and Dad are his advocate and the judge should honor their wishes rather than dictating from the bench what should happen. The judge, in my opinion, is a coward.
