Know that the Bible instructs us to repent and confess our sins unto the Lord...

But IF all of our sins were already forgiven in Cross...

Will God still forgive us even if we do not confess them to Him?

just asking, as during one of Sunday School classes, my pastor explained Lordship/Free grace positions...

said some at dallas seminary, where he graduated from, had some evn taking free grace to position where a Christian need not even confess their sins anymore!

Are all sins forgiven at the cross yes. Do we as believers need to Confess them the bible says yes 1 John 1:9. Why confess if they are forgiven? the verse is quite clear when we confess known sins "confess our sins" then God is faithful and just to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (unknown sins). Do we know everything that is a sin in our life, 1 John 1:9 says no. That confession is us telling God, like the prodigal confessed to his father, that we have sinned and that we are turning from walking in it. That restores our fellowship.

First I cannot understand why any believer would not confess his/her sin.
    That being said I assume that you pointed to 1John 1:9 about confessing our sin but that passage is not speaking about the saved/a believer. That passage is speaking about the Gnostics who had crept in and making false claims one of which was they claimed they had no sin making them lost while they claimed to be right with God. If you notice it says this;
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness

The saved are already cleansed and this passage is speaking to those who have not been cleansed and in this case the Gnostics. For the believer fellowship is never broken as some try and teach. In fact when we sin fellowship becomes alive to another level although usually not a pleasant one.

If John was speaking about the gnostics, is John including himself in the gnostics since he continues to use the word "we"?

Actually if a man will not confess his sins to God he just may not be saved at all. However when we do we are forgiven of all sins past, present, and future. Unlike Lord ship salvation as taught by Mac Author I do not believe one has to work to keep his or her Salvation if this were so Salvation would not be free and it is.
Rom 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Than would it just be the "gnostics" whwhom John warns, "if we say we have no sin, make God out a liar, and Truth is not in us?"

Wouldn't this be applicable to belioevers also, that we are those who still sin, and need to still get cleanse?

So when jesus Himself asks us to continue to abide in Him, and Paul exhorts us to daily get refilled with Holy Spirit, not referring to fact we CAN break fellowship, yet still have a relationship with God?

Are you saying God will 'allow" for sin and other things in believers and no fellowship breakage?

What about Hebrews warning us about getting a heavy chaistisement by our Heavenly father, IF we refuse to heed his warnings?

So when God commanded the same of the Jews in the Old Testament were they saved or lost. Did they believe in the coming saviour or did their sacrifices save them.

Leviticus 5:1And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

2Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.

3Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty.

4Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.

5And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:

Look at verse 5 they are to confess that they had sinned and they were to name that sin. Just as we are.

I find it interesting that you consider the apostle John a Gnostic. John says we, so that the we would include John as one that had to confess His sins.

1 John 1: 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Verses 6 through 10 John says "WE" if we, so if the "WE" are Gnostics that would mean John was a Gnostic and had turned from the truth. Interesting teaching. In fact John says "WE" in almost every verse of the first chapter and starts off chapter 2 with 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

My little children this is definitely a reference to believers, John he wrote these things to you little children so you sin not. Sure appears this whole book is addressing believers. But maybe John was a Gnostic and none of us caught it before.

I'm not sure the point you're trying to make...but please finish out the thought by citing v. 6: he shall bring to the LORD as his compensation for the sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin. (ESV)

So, again, unsure of your point, the confession is not all that is required. The sacrifice is, ultimately, the major thing in view in the passage you are referring to.

For them they offered the sacrifice with their sin. For us we just need to confess our sin because Christ is our Sacrifice for sin. The Jewish believer like the believers of our time had to confess their sin.

    OK. Thanks for the clarification.

But, are you, then, saying that in order for us to be forgiven of our individual sins today that we have to confess them?

For instance, let's say a believer is driving 70 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. We know that speeding is a sin because it breaks the rules of the Government and the posting of a speed limit does not go against scripture.

So, then, the believer gets into an accident and dies. Does he go to hell because he has unconfessed, and, therefore, by the definition of some, unforgiven sin?

We must confess our sins to restore fellowship.
When we don't confess God doesn't here our prayers. We aren't walking with Him.

But if we were killed we most certainly would go to heaven.

The sin is forgiven but in order that we are filled with the Spirit Epheshians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; (This is the CWOL) Christian Way of Life to be filled with the Spirit.
Paul is saying don't let anything except the Holy spirit be in control of your life and if we have just one sin it is in control. Confess restores fellowship, the filling of the Holy Spirit (i.e. under the Holy Spirit's control) and our prayers can be answered. Once a person is saved they are always saved.
Once you are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, which is what occurs at Salvation you are always indwelt by the Spirit.

At salvation the believer is Baptized by or with the Holy Spirit. He indwells and fills us. We can lose the filling when we sin and need to confess, we can never lose the indwelling He has taken permanent residence in us as the earnest of our salvation.
