LONDON (AFP) – Christians have long celebrated Jesus Christ's Last Supper on Maundy Thursday but new research released Monday claims to show it took place on the Wednesday before the crucifixion.

Professor Colin Humphreys, a scientist at the University of Cambridge, believes it is all due to a calendar mix-up -- and asserts his findings strengthen the case for finally introducing a fixed date for Easter.

Humphreys uses a combination of biblical, historical and astronomical research to try to pinpoint the precise nature and timing of Jesus's final meal with his disciples before his death.

Researchers have long been puzzled by an apparent inconsistency in the Bible.

While Matthew, Mark and Luke all say the Last Supper coincided with the start of the Jewish festival of Passover, John claims it took place before Passover.
Humphreys has concluded in a new book, "The Mystery Of The Last Supper", that Jesus -- along with Matthew, Mark and Luke -- may have been using a different calendar to John.
"Whatever you think about the Bible, the fact is that Jewish people would never mistake the Passover meal for another meal, so for the Gospels to contradict themselves in this regard is really hard to understand," Humphreys said.

"Many biblical scholars say that, for this reason, you can't trust the Gospels at all. But if we use science and the Gospels hand in hand, we can actually prove that there was no contradiction."

In Humphreys' theory, Jesus went by an old-fashioned Jewish calendar rather than the official lunar calendar which was in widespread use at the time of his death and is still in use today.

This would put the Passover meal -- and the Last Supper -- on the Wednesday, explaining how such a large number of events took place between the meal and the crucifixion.

It would follow that Jesus' arrest, interrogation and separate trials did not all take place in the space of one night but in fact occurred over a longer period.
Humphreys believes a date could therefore be ascribed to Easter in our modern solar calendar, and working on the basis that the crucifixion took place on April 3, Easter Day would be on April 5.

I posted this a few days ago before seeing your post. This was in the post what day did Christ die or something to that effect. I think scritpure has shown the fact since it was written.

The unleavened bread feast was 15 Nisan which would have been the high sabbath, 14 nissan was the passaover and the 13th would have been the day the lamb was killed. 33 A.D. Jewish calender shows this perfectly. Wednesday the 13 Nisan 33 A.D. started on what is our Tuesday evening at 6:00 ended Wednesday at 6:00. This would have been the prepartion day. Notice "John 19: 14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!" So Wednesday evening would have begun the Passover. The evening of His crucifixion they went to the upper room where they planned to have passover, never does it say they ate the passover meal. Here is John 13:1 "Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end."
verse 2 "And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;"
John goes from saying before the feast of passover to saying hey were eating supper, not the feast. Matthew 26: 26 "And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body." As they were eating, again no mention of eating the passover. Mark 14:12 "And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?" Matthew states the beginning of unleavened bread, the feast itself was on the 15th so the preparation for the two began on the 13th. Mark 14: 18 "And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me." 22 "And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body."
Again no mention of eating the passover meal, they ate.
Luke 22: 15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:

He desires to eat it but did he, seems by all the other passages He didn't get to eat it.

His human desire wanted to but as the other passages show he didn't.

16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

He tells them He will not be able to eat it.

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Notice He took bread but the passover feast was a Lamb.

20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

So all this was taking place on the 13th our Tuesday night their Wednesday. Then Pilate examines the Lamb and finds it worthy. He found no fault.

I have been preaching this for 15 years at least. The last supper was the preparatory meal, not the passover. Its right out of Exodus. On the day of preparation all the leaven in the house would be consumed, all the yeast used up and all with leavened wine drunk. That is what the disciples shared with Jesus. There was no lamb, it was the feast of preparation, part of the passover weak and part of the passover celebration, but distict and different from the passover meal.

The actual passover meal was celebrated on the day after Jesus was crucified, starting at nightfall that evening. (remember the Jewish day starts at nightfall, not at sunrise). As Jesus lay dying on the cross, on that very moment, the lambs that had been set aside 14 days before were being killed and their blood drained throughout Jerusalem and all Judea.

So "this is my body..." and "this is my blood..." would have contained yeast?!? Doesn't that throw a monkey wrench into the symbolism of the last supper and how we observe it today?

All yeast was left out of the house and the bread even on the day of preparation.
