Back when JC Superstar came out-----my dad identified the charactors with the Hippie movement

He shielded us from its influence----I guess for no other reason then the male charactor's hair was touching their shirt collars and beyond!!

 

I never saw it and it had nothing to do with Hippies.

To me the very title was mocking. Jesus, is our Lord and Savior. A far cry from "J C Superstar".

 

Yes & I grew up with it! ...... "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is Cool" (a Lyric taken from the show)..... Honestly it has allot to like & for purists to maybe dislike. It was advertised as a Rock Opera that was released in the 70's....so on average I'd say go and watch & draw your own conclusions, but I really dont see how youd be offended. you might enjoy it.

I was a kid during the "Jesus Movement" of the early 70's. The church I grew up in had become extremely liberal and so JCS was extremely popular in our church. I probably watched it dozens of times but usually fell asleep.

The slightly less blasphemous "Godspell" was also a big one. I still don't like the way Jesus was portrayed but the music was better and I had a crush on the blonde chick.

I'm with Blackbird, my folks equated the movie with hippies and rock music, both of which were off limits to good Christian children. Which means I've never seen it either.

 

I remember when this came out at the movies, back in 1973(I was an unsaved highschool student at the time);
I went to see it twice, with two different dates. I even bought the soundtrack album.

At that time I worked part-time as a janitor at the grade school and I remember a co-worker I had, who was a preacher-boy, who was attending a local Bible college.

He repeatedly tried to discourage me from going to see this movie, but he was unsuccessful;.
(Looking back at it, he could have pointed out that the movie ends without a resurrection, and then explain to me how terrible that was.)
But he didn’t.

In fact, he never once told me how to get saved, or the fact that I needed to get saved.
If I had gotten saved at age 17, the next 10 years, sure would have been different!

Incidentally, my dad's name was James Claude, "J.C." to his friends and my mom. Many jokes were made about that.

 

I was a new Christian when "Jesus Christ Superstar" came out. I loved the music at the time, but even then I noticed the lack of a Resurrection in the movie/play. I learned not too much later that the play/movie was written by a non-believer, trying to ridicule Christians. However, I have also met several people who first learned about the real Jesus Christ through the play/movie.

Looking back, I am glad somebody made that "terrible" play/movie, because I now have more brothers and sisters in Christ because of it. God can (and does) use anything to bring His children to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ! To Him be the glory!

BTW, I also liked Godspell, but now I remember nothing about it! Jesus Christ Superstar, I remember! Funny, isn't it?

I have seen Godspell in the small theatre. I really enjoyed and appreciated it, and enjoyed the music. It ain't for everybody though. I would see it again.

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar in the big theatre. Didn't care for it. I think it had to do with the pole dancing on the cross rather than the hippie stuff. I wouldn't choose to see it again.

Now, on the other hand, I saw Joseph and technicolor dream coat and loved it, loved the music.
