    Do you read books that you completely disagree with just to experience a different thought, or do you try to read books that you will generally agree with?

    I will read books that I disagree with if I feel the need to. I did read Michael and Debi Pearl's books because so many women that I meet in real life or online read them and think they are good so I felt I needed to be educated in what they were saying and what might be wrong with them. Fortunately, I did not buy the books but two people sent them to me to have as reference books. I will not buy books I will disagree with unless I just didn't know about it. Like Rob Bell's new book - I have no desire to support him in purchasing the book but if someone would loan it to me, I'd read it.

    But most of the time, I will read books that I will agree with. I don't have a lot of reading time and I would rather read a good book than a bad book.

    On occasion I will read books that I know I will disagree with especially if they are popular books. It helps me to know what the book says and I am able to point out any error they may have.

    A friend of mine from years ago had worked at a meat packing plant when he was in college. He still had a stamp from there that said "Bologna". Whenever he would read books that had erroneous teaching he would use that stamp to stamp in bright red "Bologna" next to the error so that if anyone picked up that book later on, they would see the stamp and know it was wrong teaching.

    One time when I was traveling through South Carolina, I stopped at Bob Jones University to look around in their book store. I did purchase a book (don't remember what it was) and when I was checking out the clerk put a sticker in the front of the book explaining that the university may or may not agree with the contents of the book but that sometimes it was useful for study. I have thought about have some stickers made stating such for books that I have which contain error.

    When I went to put the two books from the Pearls on my bookshelf, my husband ran and got the red Sharpie and wrote on the edge "For research only, the contents are garbage" LOL

    I think all books have some value and can lend their content to one's growth in the faith.

    Reading my Church of England books gives me a better understanding of their view on infant baptism, and not just accepting a baptist viewpoint of, "OH! They sprinkle babies for salvation!"

    I grew up in that church and was eventually led to Jesus Christ as Saviour when I was thirteen and taking confirmation classes. I was later immersed in the Plymouth Brethren movement. I was amillenial; the PB's were dispensational, but I still read their books.

    My library of over 10,000 books is a grand mixture, and I wouldn't have it any other way. It broadens my understanding and makes me more tolerant to other belief systems, whilst I am without doubt an avowed calvinist.

    Always read with an open mind, but never forget werein you are rooted.

    It is so easy to say that Harold Camping (or put in any name) is wrong about (fill in the doctrine). But unless you know exactly what he said, and what he meant - could be different meaning. We need to research for ourselves so we can intelligently discuss our differences.

    It is so easy just to take the word of someone without knowing the full story. For example, there are still people who think that Sara Palin said she can see Russia from her back porch.

    i love reading..and i read both books i agree and disagree with.. but like annsi ..i wont spend money on books i may not disagree with...

    I own a Book or Mormon, and have studied it so as to not be ignorant about it. I didn't buy it, though. It was given to me by a door-knocking young man with a white shirt and a black tie.

    So Dcorbett, which is it, do you own a Mormon or a book? :smilewinkgrin:

    Of course, I realize you meant Book OF Mormon.
    That is the reason we need to discern what has been said by someone or more importantly what someone has said about someone else. It is so easily for someone to say something that could easily be easily construed differently- and possibly on purpose.

    Bottom line, I like to get all three sides of a story.
    I do like the Fox liner "We report - you decide"
