Has anyone else had a 'Coming-Out' experience? In my case, in the past year I left the 'Old Fashioned, Independant, Fundamental, King James Only' movement but still uncomfortable with being open about that with people whom I once associated with in that movement. In many ways I'd like to reach out to them and discuss my story and recent journey but I'm concerned that I might lose relationships/friendships.

I don't mean to specifically discuss the movement I listed above but hoped to hear what other people would share about their experience.

I'm hearing more & more stories from people about their "coming-out" experience. I left that denomination many years ago. I've tried to reach family friends who are still caught up in the manipulative deception, but it is very difficult for them to see the truth from the inside. I will occasionally see a light of understanding in their eyes, but is is quickly extinguished by the priestly-pastors they really on for spiritual nourishment. (if you can call it that)

I use the KJV to preach with due to it being the version most folks my age were raised with. I have never objected to other versions nor do I say the KJV is the only one to use. I have been in churches that do and even known pastors that do. The KJV is 400 years old this year it has withstood the test of time, but if you study the history behind the english versions of the bible you would discover that the KJV closely follows two mens english translations and mirrors in many ways one specifically. Those would be Wycliffe who translated all of the NT and part of the OT from the Latin Vulgate. The other Tyndale who was able to use the origianl greek to translate from. Much of the KJV is from Tyndales translation. From there come the other versions. We need to thank God for men like Wycliffe and Tyndale and the martyrdom they suffered to bring the common man the English bible.

Get them into a discussion of how the English bible came about. Try a book by Harold Rawlings called TRIAL BY FIRE. Here is his website:

http://www.haroldrawlings.com/default.asp He makes it clear he is not KJV only but is very versed on how the english versions came into existence.

Another thread bashing IFB. It's what this thread is going to quickly devolve into (as illustrated by michael-acts17:11's post). We've have lots of these recently on this board.

Maybe we should start a "going in" thread.... Since I left liberalism for the biblical church I am in...and it just happens to be IFB KJV.

    Seriously.....
Please realize that there are a lot of us who attend and belong to IFB, and we love our churches and our church families. Please don't insult us or belittle us for our stance. We are all saved by grace if we call ourselves Baptists, right?

That I would not do, many IFB's don't support the KJV only, if you do that is your preference. Read my post erlier it wasn't intended to degrade anyone nor insult or belittle.

Thanks for bringing that up. I don't want it to be a bashing so please, anyone that replies, keep it relative to the topic of what you experienced in the process and the changing dynamics of relationships and how you have changed as a person. Maybe also include suggestions on what to do and what not to do. Basically, I'd like to understand how others have coped with having to change the fundamental dynamics of the relationships that we value (family, friends, fellow church members, etc) when they decided to change what they have been for so long. So, it could be that some 'came-out' of Catholicism, Islam, Alcoholism, abusive domestic relationships, a cult, atheism, SBC, or whatever 'ism'. I didnt mean to put the focus on IFBKJVO, that just happened to be my experience. Thank you again for bring that out.

(Please see my previous post as well.) I do agree with what you say and appreciate where you're coming from. Yes, we are all saved by grace. :) The vast majority are good people who love the Lord. May we all keep that in mind.

I don't think the church I was in was 'IFB'. At least, we never referred to it that way and I wasn't familiar with the term as an identifier until recently. I would still consider myself an Independant and of Fundamental persuasion, but it seems like I can be that without observing and promoting all of the other idiosyncratcies (i.e. baggage).

...enough of me about that for now... Hopefully others will reply with their experience in accordance to the OP and the part I bolded in one of the previous replies.

Any time you leave a church you're going to lose some friends, that is if you had any friends in your former church. You won't see them as often and you will drift apart. It's just the way things are.

However, I sense that you are less concerned with drifting apart than with being shunned by those in the church you are leaving. Considering that the group you are coming out of only fellowships with their own kind, I expect you will lose some friends fast. I'm not slamming IFB's, just stating it like it is.

Interesting. I'm IFB. I have friends that are Methodist. I have friends that are SBC. My own father is Episcopalian.

When I was a teen I was saved in an IFB KJVO church. I quit attending that church when I was a senior in high school, as I disagreed with the rules and regulations (hair length on males, skirt length on women, rules about music, rules about movies, etc.)

Since then I have attended mega-churches, seeker sensitive churches, Calvinist Baptist churches, etc. Now I am back in an IFB church. Yes, they use the KJV but as yet I haven't heard any other versions denigrated. They sing old fashioned hymns and the Pastor wears a tie. Though I may disagree with some minor points of the doctrine there, I'm OK with all of this.

So I've had a coming out and a coming back in!

I "came out" of the Free Will Baptist denomination due to doctrinal & philosophical changes.

Because of the sensitivity of some of the IFBs, I can't explain my "coming out"... it would hurt their feelings..because it seems that they can't see truth from being blinded. But I will say, that God rescued me from the same type people Jesus called hypocrites while here on Earth.

You know..you would think that because of my age (25 as of the 3rd of this month..yey me!!) /generation I'd be more attracted to the whole modern day church that is on the opposite end of the spectrum from IFB lifestyle..but i love it..

I left the church when i was 17..actually.. i left the christian life all together you'd think...starting modeling (indecently..swimsuit, imports), acting,, go-go dancing, and nightclub promoting...I was a wild one haha..

I lived with my boyfriend, and drank ..alot... the Lord started pulling me in again..and we started going to this church down the street..its considered a "non-denominational" type church.. they have a band, worship and praise contemporary christian style, the pastors wife is also a "pastor".... and although part of me thought it was cool because it was a lively and fun atmosphere..it didnt seem right to me deep down inside.. this was also the church where my then-boyfriend, now husband..was saved..but that was pretty much as far as it went for him.. he/we did not start growing spiritually until we started going to the church i grew up in and had left..IFB church..i felt at home again..

now if you see my husband (i have photos in my profile) he is definitely not your average looking IFB church member..but our church family welcomed him from the start and made him feel at home..

our pastor always says this "There are 2 things you should get when you go to a church..that is the word of God, and the love of his church".. and thats exactly what our church exemplifies..

I like the purity of things in the traditional IFB setting..and a lot of the modern "contemporary" christian music and styles remind me a little too much of the club music and styles i was immersed in at one point...i hear some of the christian "rock" songs and I can automatically point out which ungodly rock band it reminds me of..and sometimes even hear an ungodly song that this christian rock song sounds like..thats even more reason for me to stay away..because i am constantly struggling with my flesh..and every now and then I think about "how fun" it was being in the world..Its hard enough being at the mall or at a store .. i dont really need to get reminded at church too.. lol...

overall..i'll stop rambling now... i dont understand why people make a big deal out of the traditional setting of IFB..from my experience.. my IFB church is not trying to be more appealing to the world by changing up the music to be "modern".. (galations 1:10 is a great verse by the way!).. they "keep it real" lol.. I dont see anything wrong with trying to live a pure and holy lifestyle.. some people dont think that's cool..but the bible wasn't made to be cool or appealing... we wont ever be perfect, but we as christian should strive to get as close to Jesus' example as possible..He showed us its possible..and what some of you call "legalistic" to me is just striving to be holy, and not conforming to the blurred lines that today's "contemporary christian" outlook has..

I'm not trying to judge anyone who is into the whole contemporary thing, but seems like there are so many who are contemporary that like bashing IFBs and how we live our lives
