So why is waterboarding of a mater mind of the 9-11 attacks wrong...

But shooting to death another unarmed master mind of the 9-11 attacks right?

My question would be, why are either of them wrong? Even our service men in training are waterboarded to help prepare them for potential capture. Police officers are sprayed with mace and tazered for their training, yet using these methods on a known terrorist to potentially save millions of lives is somehow unacceptable???

These are the same people who fight to save the egg of an eagle or some owl, but are fine with aborting a human baby.

I don't think I will ever understand the mind of a liberal.

Targus, I've thought the same thing. I think there are a few ultra-liberals who are consistent on this (Michael Moore - didn't he criticize the killing of OBL?), but for the most part, it appears they will support Obama in all that he does, even if it is the same (or worse - think budget deficits) course of action that GWB took.

    Party hacks.

Because bin Laden did not surrender. I've said that about four times on the board. If he did surrender, and then he was shot, I'd have a problem with it. Also, you're comparing apples and oranges. I'm against torture, but shooting someone in a military operation like this is not torture.

It's important to note that Barack Obama is not a real progressive, particularly on civil liberties. For example, the Guantanamo Bay prison is still open, the PATRIOT Act was extended, etc.

Paul, my question is what do you consider torture? As stated, even our service men in training are waterboarded to help prepare them for potential capture. Police officers are sprayed with mace and tazered for their training, yet using these methods on a known terrorist to potentially save millions of lives is somehow unacceptable???

I'd say the requirements to get into most sports, clubs, fraternities and even the military would be consider torturous by some liberal groups. Missing meals, being awakened at all hours, forced to eat and drink things you don't like, physical demands beyond what the body can normally endure etc etc... Heaven forbid an enemy combatant is subjected to discomfort for the sake of saving lives even the degree that college jock is subjected to make the team.

    BO not a progressive? Ha! That's a good one.

The only reason why your two examples are still in place is because at this time there is no better option.

I've got a better option- follow the Constitution, even the parts conservatives don't like.

So is it acceptable for police officers to shoot to kill unarmed people? If Osama was unarmed, why not just take him into custody via force?

This was not a police action. It was a military action. No one knows what else he has at his disposal. Maybe he has another rifle or access to a bomb. I will trust the instincts of the professional soldier who were in the situation at the time. They were given a job to do. They did it... Now everyone gets to 2nd guess them at their leisure what these men did in a blink of an eye.

I think most of us would agree with you Tom, but the questioning is in attempt to point out the hypocrisy of liberals who are bragging on BO for the death of OBL in light of their past views on these matters when a less liberal president is making the call.

I bet Gadhafi's a bit more nervous after OBL's execution.

I did not say that shooting an unarmed person trapped in a small room was torture.

I am asking why you think that it is right.

What did bin Laden do in his non-surrender that would justify shooting him for not surrendering?

    Did he have a weapon?

Did he advance against his captors?

Did he have another way out of the compound?

Was it not possible to incapacitate him without putting a bullet in his head?

Wasn't the body shot enough to make him surrender?

So why is waterboarding a helpless person wrong but double tapping a helpless person ok?

I understand, I am tired of people comparing this operation in unfriendly territory to a police action in which law officers are attempting to apprehend a suspect.
