Mom passed away Sunday after a long struggle with diabetes, heart failure, and Alzheimer disease. She was a a tiny, 105 lb, 4' 8”, feisty farm girl of Irish descent who was raised in the foothills of Eastern Kentucky, and had been a devout Southern Baptist for most of her life. First and foremost, she was a doer; and an unselfish one at that. Her motives were pure and simple: she thought and cared for others. Much of her life was literally devoted to the religion of Jesus Christ in the care and service of others. My brothers and I could not have had a more loving and caring mother, nor my father a more loving and caring wife. She was intelligent and an avid reader with a witty sense of humor. She had taught Southern Baptist Sunday and/or Bible Schools throughout most of her adult Christian life and was active in more than one church women's groups. She was my mom. Thank you Lord.

I'm sorry for your loss, kyredneck. She fits the description of the Proverbs 31 woman. You were blessed that she was your mom!

By the way, I was born in eastern Kentucky (Middlesboro). So howdy from a fellow Kentuckian!

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Her funeral was today. The preacher had an easy service to perform. She actually preached her own funeral from the life she had lived.

There was soooo much food that was brought. Her Church provided a dining area and many friends and family were able to meet together and enjoy a meal and fellowship after the graveside service. There were no tears; there was a lot of laughter, conversation, and storytelling. It was just exactly the way she would have wanted it to be. Again, thank you Lord.

I'm looking for the Like button but this ain't Facebook. I preached from I Timothy 1:5 this morning by tracing my maternal line from a poor Jewish man who married a Catholic girl in 1890's Prussia(my great-grandparents). Their son (my grandfather) married the daughter (my grandmother) of a Cornish miner and his wife Mary (the other set of great grandparents). I followed them through my Grandma, my Mother, to the sincere faith within me as well.

The common thread in all of this is that each one of them knew Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The Prussian side became Dutch Reformed. The Welsh started to attend a Primitive Methodist Church. Grandma made her profession there. Grandpa went to a Billy Sunday crusade in Scranton and walked "the sawdust trail". Mom got saved in the same church as her mother.

We are blessed kyredneck to have had godly mothers. :godisgood:

Probably passed it 1000 times ..... remotley familiar. These are what, Wesleyan? In the old days, all the Scranton Welsh were planted by Davies (pronounced DAVIS) & Jones Funeral Chapel (everything was a chapel to those people) on south Main Street in Scranton & I used to hear them speaking in Welsh.... even the pastors did that. If you moved closer to Taylor & Moosic it was Jacob Davis Funeral Home. The Plymouth Presbyterian Church still holds classed in the old language, believe it or not......but thats an old world area.....you would be hard pressed to find those kinda churches & those kinda people around anymore.
