One thing I've noticed is that a majority of white Baptists are politically conservative, while most black Baptists are politically liberal. A couple of months ago, I was talking about politics with my Jewish bass guitar teacher and he said I was the first white Baptist he had met who was a progressive. I responded that there are many Democrats in Congress who are Baptist and that three out of the four Baptist U.S. Presidents have been Democrats. Even though white Baptists are disproportionally connies, it isn't fair to lump all of us into the right-wing camp.

So, I have a couple of topics for discussion:

    1. Why are white Baptists stereotyped as all being conservative in spite of the multitude of white Baptist Democratic politicians?

    2. Why are there more white liberal Baptists than black conservative Baptists?

I included some facts about white Baptist Democrats in government and based the rest off personal observation.

Why does everything seem to boil down to race for you "progressives"?

    They both vote their pocketbook.

Conservatives want government to keep their hands off their money and those that vote democrat are looking to get something for nothing.

It was still never explained why this one whole group of people has such a problem with "just trying to get something for nothing" (and that's granting that such a ridiculous overgeneralization even has any kind of validity).

I also in this light could never forget this striking post http://www.baptistboard.com/showpost.php?p=1666520&postcount=28:eek::tonofbricks:

And I couldn't believe the "white" race would be slammed like that, so that it must have been a tongue in cheek switcheroo, and of course it's really that other "certain ethnic minority" who are the "takers, not makers" (as was said elsewhere); and this time, not just for welfare, but also for "quitting construction" and going into government. (So even if they do work, they're still no good "takers").

But how could they have "left" construction, when they've had such a hard time getting in, in the first place:

    http://www.personneltoday.com/artic...ake-up-just-3.3-of-construction-industry.html

    http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/...inorities-entering-the-construction-industry/

    http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1365/is_3_32/ai_78629398/ (older; regarding one company)

They're claiming both outright discrimination, plus some sort of "bantering". I can't verify how true it is, but still, that perception is apparently why they have not gone into construction, however "efficient" it might be.

So the reason why those people go into government, and vote democratic, is because those are what seem to be in their best interests. (Whether true or not). It's more stable than most private jobs, and these people who do that obviously don't want to just go on welfare; so at least give them credit for that!
It's about their survival, not taking something from you, or getting it for "nothing". (Just like the other side, who see limiting government as their survival). They're not the ones shutting down business and replacing it with more government jobs; they're simply going for what's there, and what is most stable. (And I see many lower level government jobs, which is where these people would work, are being downsized as well. Like I hear the NY State Courts will be cutting hundreds of jobs).

"Construction industry needs to do more to attract ethnic minority workers"

Yep, lots of whites would like to work in the construction industry. My neighbor could not find a job for weeks because he could not speak spanish to fit in with the all spanish crews. He finally got a job roofing because he didn't have to communicate with the ALL spanish crew that much.

What "something for nothing"? What money descending on voters? So it's really every single person voting Democrat? What are they "getting" that no one else is?
Most I see advocating Democrat see the Republicans as doing the opposite of what you claim, and that is taking from everyone else to give to big business (whether that is always true or not), rather than them wanting to take what one person earns and give it to someone who didn't earn, or keep it themselves.

And taxes go to both programs, and breaks for the rich/business. The poor or certain other groups, or all Democrats, are not getting all the money in the country.

Eric, don't you hate what the white liberal democrat welfare system has done to the Black American family?

I've not noticed the things you mention in the UK. Here, few of our politicians would claim to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, and I would imagine that not many of those would be baptists, whatever the colour of their politics or their skin. :)

That is not the product of only one side of the political system. It was set in motion by the racism of the past (whether Democrat or Republican). You can't absolve that of starting the cycle many of the people are in.
The liberal Democrats in the 60's and afterwards sought to do an about face and push equality through programs and such. These may have had some of these negative side-effects, such as abuse of the programs, or the "new slavery" as conservatives call it; and the motives may not have always been right (And some blacks, such as the more "revolutionary" ones, were even suspicious of white liberalism as well).
But still, the liberal Democrats were seen as providing more hope (right or wrong), to the people, compared to Republicans, who have seemed to favor only big business. So to the race as a whole, it's not simply "they're going to give us something for nothing". It's more like "they seem less likely to take from us to give to big business".

It's a lot like the dilemma many of you conservatives face, in being largely unhappy with the latter-day Republican party (let's not forget this); yet they're still seen as the "lesser of two evils". (And just like you argue the Dems are really hurting blacks, people like Ponch will say the same as to what the Reps are really doing to you).
