    Romney Won't Sign Pro-Life Pledge
6/18/2011 | Email Helen Whalen Cohen | All Posts By Blogger

What's going on? Given that he's already claimed that humans cause global warming (and been endorsed by Al Gore for it), refused to back away from Romneycare, and come out in favor of ethanol subsidies, it seems that he would want to have something left in the political war chest. It won't be pro-life credentials, though, seeing as how he refused to sign the Susan B Anthony List pledge to only appoint pro-life judges and cabinet members

It's pseudocons like Romney and Paul that make conservatives hungry for something we aren't getting.

    [..]

Among other stipulations, the pledge asked that, if elected, candidates would promise to: "Select pro-life appointees for relevant Cabinet and Executive Branch positions, in particular the head of National Institutes of Health, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health & Human Services.

"Advance pro-life legislation to permanently end all taxpayer funding of abortion in all domestic and international spending programs, and defund Planned Parenthood and all other contractors and recipients of federal funds with affiliates that perform or fund abortions."

In response, Romney put out his own pledge, explaining his objections to the SBA language: "I am pro-life and believe that abortion should be limited to only instances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. . . .

"As much as I share the goals of the Susan B. Anthony List, its well-meaning pledge is overly broad and would have unintended consequences. That is why I could not sign it. It is one thing to end federal funding for an organization like Planned Parenthood; it is entirely another to end all federal funding for thousands of hospitals across America. That is precisely what the pledge would demand and require of a president who signed it."

I tire of these "conservatives" that think it is ok for a murder to occur in the instance of rape or incest. If this is true, anyone who commits these acts should be legally put to death.

I liked Romney to a degree, but this has dropped him to the bottom of my list. Bring on Cain!

    Update.... I stand corrected:

Candidates Tim Pawlenty, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul all signed the pledge, but Mitt Romney and Herman Cain declined.

Who cares? He isn't going to the nominee.

Also, isn't it interesting the "Pro-Life" pledge only extends to the unborn and has nothing to do with capital punishment?

No, not interesting at all. Apples and Oranges. One is about protecting innocent life. The other has nothing to do with innocent life, well, except for the innocent victim whose life was snuffed out by the perp.

While I'm no fan of Romney, there is a lot more in that pledge than merely stating that a person is pro-life.

Before one "casts stones," it would do well for a person the read the entire pledge.

We don't need another RINO. We need another Reagan who doesn't care what the polls say about what Americans believe, and just believes what is right, no matter the outcome.

Rick Perry the other day sounded way better than this Romney. He doesn't seem to care what either the liberals think, and says he isn't trying to please all Americans, so they need to forget about that, and that he is there to run for prez and do what is morally right for this country. Well, kudos to him then.

I was not impressed with Romney, and although Herman Cain seemed like a really genuinely nice guy, he in no way has what it takes to beat Obama and run this country. Every answer he gave on the debate was over-simplified.

If Paul signed it, it can't be too pro-life. His pro-life voting record in Congress is abysmal...unless he's gearing up for a Presidential run. Then suddenly he finds a conscience.

Ron Paul is also quick to denounce pork barrel projects, entitlements, and earmarks, and then he works his hardest to bring as much of these as he can to his home district.

    But I digress...
