Daily Bible Reading, Should We Do It?

    Do you read your Bible everyday?

    When we are told that we should read out Bible every day, is this what we should do, or is this man made rules?

    If we don't read our Bible everyday, is that sinful?

    Those who get born-again and have no Bible, how is it that they seem to love the Lord God with great fervency, yet, have no Bible to read in many cases?

    Is reading your Bible in the first part of the day better for your walk with God, than ending your day in the Bible? Do you ever feel guilty that you've done so, instead of beginning the day in the Word?

    I read the Word daily. Always reading, studying, translating. And reading others' comments enhances my understanding of it.

    Not a big fan of "rush thru the Bible in a year", or a particular devotional book. Guess as a pastor/professor I am in the Word hours each day and to add another "schedule" is more burdensome.

    My wife, otoh, uses both a daily devotional guide AND reads 5-6 books (page or two) every morning. We sit together and discuss what she's found pertinent or of great interest. That is our "family" study time at this older stage of life.

    Well, I used to read through the Bible twice per year, I think that is only about 8 chapters per day, plus in devotions, preparing messages, and also for Bible College.

    Once per year now works for me. I am taking my time though through the NASB, as it is all new to me.

    I really like the NASB after using the KJV for years, and reading this different text, without many archaic words and structures has brought mor understanding to me of the Scriptures.

    God gave us His word for a reason, and it's not to sit on the coffee table and collect dust.

    2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:



    But we should read & study out of love for God and not legalism.

    Psalms 1:2-3 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.



    Sometimes I read a lot, sometimes a little. Sometimes I meditate on just a few verses at a time. But I think we should read daily because it is our nourishment. We wouldn't go a day without food for our bodies. Why go a day without food for our souls?

    How much you read is between you and the Holy Spirit. There are no rules.

    For several years it has been my personal habit to read through the Bible daily using a different translation each year. I would not make it a hard and fast rule for anyone else, but my spiritual life has certainly been enriched by this habit and I do recommend it.

    Only - as often as you eat your meals!

    Let's see if I can remember them (list is not in chronological order)-

    KJV- straight through 5-6 times (sometimes Oxford and sometimes Cambridge), plus once chronologically and once in reverse (Rev-Gen)

    NKJV

    RVR1960 (Spanish)- 2-3 times

    HCSB

    ESV

    NIrV

    Currently reading NIV2011

    @ MexDeaf - I do the same. Select a translation and then read it through (tho it takes me 2+ years or more). Verses and phrases that were "old hat" in my KJV1769 memorized translation take on new light and life shen reading in others.

    Done the Douay/Confraternity (Roman Catholic); 1901 ASV; NIV, TEV (ugh), NKJV, Geneva, New English, and yes, the Latin Vulgate!!

    Recommand CJB (Complete Jewish Bible) as a refreshing read and lots of insights since Christianity IS Jewish.

    And my last one was the Dead Sea Scrolls (obviously, incomplete text) as a dear friend was a major translator and spoke in our church about 10 years ago.

    Now have the ESV for home reading and the Holman at my office desk. Will probably be 4-5 years to finish both.

    Cool. I've just started using the NASB, I'm really starting to like it's read a lot, having been a KJV user all of my ministry.

    Reading the ESV on e-sword and apps has impressed me, I really am liking it too.
