So the scriptures says that to be absent from the body is to be present with the lord

i take it that if we are saved upon death we will go to heaven

who then are the people called "the dead in christ" mentioned here:

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:16–18).

    so ... which is it?

we die then we go up, or wait down?

    please explain

im so confused now on this

thanks brothers in advance for your reply

This passage is referring to the RAPTURE when the body is resurrected - you are rejoined with your eternal glorified resurrected body and then "caught up" -- taken off the earth. If you happen to be alive at the RAPTURE your body will be changed into an eternal resurrection body and you will be "caught up" and be taken from the earth.

passage that you quoted refers to the rapture of the Church by Jesus..
When Christians pass away now, their spirit/soul goes immeduiatly to heaven, in presense of Jesus...

Bodies stay in graves, when the Rapture occurs, our departed spiritual selves come back with jesus, get reunited with bodies, get glorified to live witht Lord!

of course this is a Futurist view, Pretierist totally diiferent!

This might be contributing to your confusion. The Bible does not say, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". But don't worry, you aren't the only person who cites this. My pastor does it all of the time and so do many of my church members and family.

Here's what it actually says. And the main idea of the passage is found in the last sentence.

I think that the first two posters have given you a good answer as to what happens when we die - the spirit/soul is present with Christ and the body, or the "earthly tent" as Paul calls it, is destroyed (dies). And when Christ returns for his bride, the corruptible and dead body will be resurrected to an incorruptible one.

Back up a couple verses and you will get your answer...

1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
1Th 4:15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive [and] remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
1Th 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
1Th 4:17 Then we which are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
1Th 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

In order for God to BRING them with him, they have to first be where God is. When we die, we go to Heaven.. at the Resurrection, God will bring us with him to recover our Body which will be changed into a glorious new body.

There are some details we will not know until we experience them.

I know this physical body returns to earth, dust to dust, ashes to ashes. I know from scripture that the believer will be absent from the body and present with the Lord, and that is enough information for me.

    Cheers,

    Jim

"house" oikētērion (Strongs G3613) GLORIFIED BODY, ie: "Heavenly Body"

NOTE: oikētērion is used in Jude 6 in reference to the bene ha Elohim - "Sons of God" in O.T. -
fallen angels who came to earth prior to the Flood of Noah and cohabited with "daughters of Adam" -
human women - to produce the hybrid Nephilim thus corrupting the human DNA.
In other words, the fallen angels "gave up" their glorified bodies in order to become more "human".

in other words .... according to your answers"

1/2 of me goes to Heaven (the spirit)
    and
1/2 of me stays in the grave (the body)

    then
at the rapture God unites both parts

    right?

oh boy .... this is really pushing me down further into confusion

why would God resurrect a corruptible body to transform it?

do we not get a heavenly body when we die?

there is something wrong here .....

i think more of the 'learned' of this forum need to explain further

i never heard any christian say "hey, when you die 1/2 of you goes to heaven".

Lord, please shine light on this, I pray.

Brother, I am sorry for your confusion. We have given scripture here. Let me offer some more.

Please read 1 Corinthians 15 in it's entirety. Read it. Pray about it and meditate on it. Paul speaks, especially towards the end (beginning with verse 35), of how our bodies will be raised and why.

Here's a link to the whole chapter. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+15&version=NIV

According to 1 Corinthians 15:35-39, God does this because it pleases Him to do so. Paul gives an analogy using reaping and sowing.

"But someone will say, “How are the dead raised up? And with what body do they come?” Foolish one, what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. And what you sow, you do not sow that body that shall be, but mere grain—perhaps wheat or some other grain. But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body."

According to what Paul is saying, it pleases God to allow our mortal bodies to die and to raise them up to a glorified and incorruptible body.
