As i still tend to see and use the NASV for study use..

Among the ESV and NIV 2011 which would be next best version to use?

Why superior to either NASV/ESV then?

You said in your OP if the choice was between the ESV and 2011 NIV.

My reason is because of the convoluted language that the ESV employs. The 2011 uses modern English not KJV filtered through the RSV biblish.

Good point about the ESV, which remains my biggest problem with it.

my pastor likes 2011 NIV to use in Church while preaching/teaching, likes NASV, but believes that the ESV is "worst of both Worlds" not as accurate as NASV, and harder to read/teach from than NIV 2011!

In time I may come around to NIV 2011.

But I can't see why anyone would think the NASV is more accurate than the ESV. What is accuracy based on here?

You fickle, fickle guy you. How long will you halt between two opinions...Sorry,thought this was a A vs. C debate for a moment.

Perhaps it's because the NASBU uses better English and is true to the originals a bit more than the ESV?

I use the NASB/ESV. I read from the ESV. Between the ESV and NIV, I choose the ESV because it's more literal than the NIV.

And the ESV is good for reading too. Yes, some will show a few weird places(Rippon gave an example of "You shall eat old store long kept"...which is almost like someone that doesn't speak English trying to say something) but overall, it's not this way in my opinion.

Agree... Cannot concord the NIV very well at all. Also, while very readable and understandable, the NIV with a thought-by-thought translation style is not well suited to actual scholarship. For that the NASB is still king among translations in English, and I prefer the original languages for clarity.

For "devotional" reading, I prefer versions like the NIV, NLT, or even The Message. I read a different version almost every year (depending on if I am in a one or two-year program, and also depending on if I am taking a year off for other reading) during my typical read through the Word. I find the freshness and new eyes helpful, even if the particular translation is not what I would consider "good."

I am working up to reading through the NT in a year in Greek.

Still considered among English versions as being Mostliterally and English, but not easiest to understand in places!

The NASBU is not the older edition. It's language is clearer. Just one item alone makes it better -- it has dropped all those conjunctions --especially the word "and". The ESV is using over-kill.

On the whole, though there are some rough spots in the NASBU --I'd say it reads better than the ESV and the NKJV.

might have to pick up both NIV 2011, waiting for it to come out in NIV study bible, and 1995 NAS
Still using ole 1977 NASB at times too much "old English" for my tastes!

My church has just bought in a pile of 1984 NIVs so that we don't have to deal with the assualt on the English language that is the NIV 2011.

If I had my way, we would be using the NKJV, but there we are.

I just don't get all the hoopla over new translations. I guess I'm just an old fuddy duddy, but I think we have enough. I don't know why anyone would want inclusive language in a bible anyway.

    Or,.."contained in the 2011 NIV."

Speaking of awkward English... You'll find many examples of tortuous English in the NKJV. It vies with the ESV for a modern translation having poor English.
