Do you do this? What if a person wants to be prayed over and annointed with oil? OK - to add in another twist - say you don't have oil with you. What do you do??

I have a story to go with this but I want to ask others first.

I've personally never done this, nor have I had it requested.

One odd thing? People have told me that anointing oil in the OT contained of all things 'hemp" and though I didn't believe this, after looking at some info online concerning this, found that it is not at all far-fetched, and may well be true.

    Anyone else heard this?

Also, heard of one preacher that said he had some "3 in 1" oil...lol...no kidding, and he used this to anoint with once.

Looking forward to it. We have done this a few times here at church. We use oil if requested, but we pray no matter what.

OK - I'm pooped so I'll spill. So we did our beach baptism yesterday and we have one of our deacons, a VERY dear man, come to my husband and some of the other pastors/elders/deacons looking for prayer and annointing since he will begin chemo today for cancer. No one had oil so hubby went to the concession stand because most of the time, you can get a small cup of cooking oil with no problem. However, in this case, the concession stand was closing and they had no oil at all. So what did he get? Mayonnaise. He came back and showed one of the other deacons who is a chef and he said that mayo is basically eggs and oil, with oil being the predominant ingredient. We asked the man what he thought and he laughed and said that it was quite fitting for him. He's a huge (300+ lb, 6 foot, 6 inch tall) guy and has a personality that is like a big bear. :) So that is what they used.

I said that if we were back in the 70s, we could have just asked anyone for some Coppertone and we would have gotten oil with no problem! Heck, BABY OIL would have been all over the beach!

So that's my story and I'm sticking with it. ROTFL!!!

On various occasions we have practiced this at the church of which I'm a member. Normally this is reserved for folks that have a very serious/life-threatening medical condition.

As to the details about what kind of oil is used, etc., I have no idea. I hold no official office or position at my church so I'm not party to those kind of decisions.

(As an aside, I did notice that Lifeway does sell vials of anointing oil. Not sure what the contents may include though.)

We USUALLY use olive oil but have used regular cooking oil when necessary. I really need to find a small vial to carry around with me. Using Helmann's is not necessarily the best choice, IMO. ;)

Forgot to say that we use olive oil.

That's a great story, Ann. The issue isn't what kind of oil, it's that we pray in faith.

Yep. That's why we weren't overly worried - but did get a good laugh about it! :) Please pray for Tom as he goes through this. His wife is a recent cancer survivor and now he's facing the illness as well. I love this man - he's such a soldier for Christ and a gentle bear of a man. We can't lose him.

I've never done it. There a few competing views on the matter.

    Haaaaa!!!!!! That's great!

Our church elders do it, just found that out recently, didn't expect it but the pastor did a message about it and bam, closed it with actually doing this for a member who had asked about it. No mayo, it was olive oil.

When I lived in another state I had to go to an E-free church kinda far out of the way of where I lived just for the purpose of having this done for one of my daughters.

Sounds like yep, it would be good to carry around a vial of olive oil.

Or at least a couple slices of bread and some smoked turkey.

I have seen this done and know of cases when it was asked to be done. And no we do not have to carry around oil. If someone requests it then the elders can gather with the oil anointing the person and praying.
