As we would believe that among those hearing would be them whom God has elected unto eternal Life via preaching/teaching of the Word?

    Why would it?

Sorry, but that is just a goofy question.

God gives us the boldness to witness, not our pet doctrines.

It might give less concern about the outward results of preaching for a Calvinist, but I don't believe it affects the boldness of the preacher. At least that is my experience.

Sorry if I offend by saying this, but I find this to be a demeaning, petty question.

Nowhere do I find that believing or not believing that I was predetermined by God to be saved, is what saved me.

Thus, your question only serves to emphasize division amongst the brethren.

How about we focus on actual Baptist Theology and Bible Study in this section?

I've heard a Presbyterian preacher once say that he is much bolder in his preaching because of the doctrines of election (etc etc).

He explained that since God promised that the elect would respond to the preaching, he is more bold as a result. He says he knows that any time he preaches, there will be results.

    That is what he said.

I've heard the other argument that basically says "Calvinism takes away the need and desire for evangelism."

All I know is that we are commanded to share the gospel with people. Period.

While i agree with others here about the phrasing of the question, I have found that the doctrines of grace further my preaching and passion for evangelism because I know that God has elect that I know nothing of, and I know that God has called His people to do what He said -- preach the word so that He can draw all people to Himself through hearing that Word preached, and so I preach, build up the church, and support missions.

Contra my position, I have found those who depend largely on the response or choice of a person to be very passionate to "convince" the person that they need to chose God, but I do not always see lasting fruit from that sort of evangelism. Lots of people make a choice, then later make another choice, and so the church has a revolving door.

At the end of the day there seems this great fear that somehow God is not capable or willing to fulfill His mandate and His election. I wonder about that sometimes, and wonder how anyone can bow before the sovereign King of all kings and yet doubt that He is indeed that sovereign King when it takes so much of "us" to fulfill His mandates.

Let me rephrase it this way

IF one holds that God will and does save his own peoples by the Gospel and Cross...

Doesn't that fact increase confidence that indded God is at work, that His word will not return void?

Just was asking, as it seems MANY of the preachers/evagelists/missionaries God used in past were indeed strong Cals with this held belief of conviction regarding truth of DoG gave them!

Not being a preacher myself, but I would assume being a Calvinist would make it only possible to preach the doctrines of Grace and that being God-centered as opposed to man-centered thus makes it much more important to preach boldly about Jesus. A Calvinist will be assured of his salvation and would want his flock to know the same truths.

Sounds about right to me!

The best most bold, edifying preaching I've ever known has come from 'Calvinists'. There's been many sermons that have made deep impressions on me and I will never forget them.

    Good post.

A belief in the Doctrines of Grace does not make one arrogant. It kills arrogance.

In some sense that might be the case, but not in every sense. I think John Piper expresses a tendency that is pretty common among some Reformed folks...

But the worse case scenario is that it's only because God causally determined me to be wrong. :)

Because you think Calvinists have to market cornered on bold preaching. You're OP clearly implies it.

Does Being a Cal Give Greater Confidence? Certainly.

It most certainly emboldened and motivated the apostle Paul:

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descendant of David, according to my gospel, for which I suffer hardship even to imprisonment as a criminal; but the word of God is not imprisoned. For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, (the elect) so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. 2 Timothy 2:8-10

Preaching the true Gospel is better than what I've witnessed of non-cals who ask a person "Are you 100% sure if you died to day you would go to heaven?" the responder says "No" and then it continues to "say this prayer and you'll be sure to go to heaven" which is a load of bunk.

Tell me where the Gospel is in that nonsense?

I see Cals/DoG/Reformed preaching not a "more faithful Gospel" but in fact the Gospel much more passionately than I've seen the non-cals. In fact I see most of the non-cals preaching a watered-down version of the Gospel, brought to the level of an sophomoric question of that above. Mens souls are way too important than to leave them up to a manipulative and dishonest non-Gospel message of "Are you 100% sure you'd go to heaven?" line. That is not the Gospel, it's trickery and shameful.

Instead, DoG's/Calvinists/Reformed brethren are preaching it clearly and more consistently.

    - Peace

Piper is correct, but skan has worn out this quote of his.

But Piper is correct, holding to a theological system (i.e. arminianism, or ones own developed non-cal theology) doesn't mean said to be truly born-again. To this I agree.
