Rhet, I noticed that you did not deal with the disputed claim that Gano baptized George Washington by immersion. I assume you put no stock in the story.

Here is what Wikipedia says about it:

    Hello Dear Brother Tom,

I ran across all of those "mythical" documents when doing the research that I could not in all good conscience use them. Too much hearsay too many times removed.

I like the story and wish it were true, but good history will not allow for it.

    Thanks for the post!

    Hello Brother MD,

Thank you for the kind words and for buying Broadus on Kindle. I hope you find it a worthy read. Took a long time to get all those guys together in one place to get it all done. But God is gracious.

If you enjoyed it, you might be interested in my newest Broadus project. I have been asked to give two lectures/sermons on John A. Broadus for the Founders Conference Mid West in Missouri at (not necessarily there) the Missouri Baptist University (MoBap). The titles of the two lectures are:

"How Did John A. Broadus Embrace the Doctrine of Election" &

"How Did John A. Broadus's Understanding of Election Affect His Pastoral Ministry."

I am about 1/2 done with the first lecture/sermon and it has really been a lot of work but a lot of "academic" fun.

Keep in touch and I will tell you how it goes (if you want to know?). :wavey:

    Thanks for the article.

Gano was a remarkable man, both before, during and after his chaplaincy. (I'm also glad you didn't bring up the tale of the baptism of Washington, which unfortunately tends to cloud his many accomplishments.)

Accounts of his early years as an emissary for the Philadelphia Baptist Association to the South provide a glimpse into what it was to be a Baptist in those days, and he was a pioneer in Kentucky (and in fact is buried near the supposed resting place of Daniel Boone.) Too bad his offspring veered off into Restorationism.

Yes, grandson John Allen Gano became a disciple of Barton Stone, then joined up with the Reformed Baptists:

Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement: Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Christian Churches/Churches of Christ, Churches of Christ, s.v. "Gano, John Allen":

    John A. Gano's great-great-grandson was Howard Hughes.
