Excessive sitting linked to premature death in women

Research released last fall found that women who sat for more than six hours a day had a 37 percent increased risk of premature death, compared to 18 percent for men. Those results stayed the same, even when factors such as an individual's diet, amount of physical activity and smoking were taken into account.

I get so tired of these statistics. I am 84, suffered 4 strokes, and statistically, I was supposed to die 10 ten years ago! I am diabetic, have only half a functioning brain, parlysed hands and right side of body, which limits my physicality, and I am still going strong.

Statistically, I should be dead. My parents died in their early to mid sixties, yet my two older sisters are ten and 7 years older than me. So much for statistics..oh, yes, and they have smoked all their lives. Not that I recommend smoking!!!!!

I just don't like alarming statistics......They are doing the killing.

Maintain your weight, eat right and keep as active as possible, both intellectually and physcally, and you might be amazed at how long you may live under God's guidance and control.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Try throwing statistics at God. Right here is a prime example of the power of God. None of us will leave one second before He sees fit to call our name. I am thankful, Bro. Jim, for the many healings He has performed on you. :jesus::godisgood:

I saw the headline when I was checking the news on my smartphone. I had to look twice to make sure the source wasn't the Onion. It just seems so stupid to write a story like that and claim legitimacy.

I agree with Jim. We can make "studies" say pretty anything we want them to say...and this is from someone who has been involved in the fitness industry and is quite active myself. If you take care of yourself, eat right, exercise, and supplement when needed...sitting is not going to kill you if this is required for your line of work. The stress in worrying about such a stupid study will kill you.

Some of the statistics may be/are overdone/overworked, but we sit more now than ever before and it is certainly a legitimate concern. Between TV, computers, and desk jobs we sit an alarming amount of hours each day. Our bodies were not designed to constantly be in the position of a sit and be this idol and there is NO denying the negative physiological effects it has on our bodies. I have been academically studying the body and wellness for 3 rigorous years now while earning a Physical Therapy degree and a HUGE part of the healing process is EXERCISE and a MAJOR reason people lose their ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living – their quality of life) is from lack of MOTION due to non-use! The motto of the American Physical Therapy Association is “Move Forward”.

There was a belief in the rural area where I grew up with a saying that went like this: "Sit down and do nothing and you die." This may not be one hundred percent true ... my mother-in-law was an example of one who sat and did nothing and yet lived a long life ... but I do believe it increases a persons probability of "going home" before their time.

Of course we are.....how else can we get to Heaven...the closer to death we are, the closer to ETERNAL life.

    So why be afraid!!

Standing up often and stretching is a good thing then, or you might ask for one of these:

Well, since I'm not a woman I guess I don't have to worry about all the sitting I do. Sitting is my second favorite position, with lying down being my favorite. :sleeping_2:

I think there's a case to be made that some folks are simply genetically disposed to long life.

There is some research that indicates that a gene variation, called the Methuselah Gene, is common in those who live a long time.

A few years ago, I read in the Wall Street Journal about this woman who had it. Seven of her eight great-grandparents will still living. They joked that the eight great-grandparent quit smoking at 92 and died of boredom at 96.

I think you are correct, mate. My parents were gone in mid 60's.....My grandfather and grandmother (father's side) were both in 90's. My older sisters are 94 and 91,,both smokers, and I am 84 and suffered 4 strokes as well as diabetic...still going strong.

The scripture talks about three score years and ten, and if by reason of strength 10 more..........well....one day at a time...

    Cheers,

    Jim
