The following is a quote from a book I'm reading,

"Our conversion to Christ begins a lifelong battle with the flesh-it is not removed once and for all....when we are born again, our old nature doesn't disappear. Instead a new nature is introduced, and the struggle begins. The two of them battle to the death daily." (From "The Road to Reality" by K.P. Yohannan, page 52)

I know I still struggle with sin. I recognize it immediately and try to avoid it and ask forgiveness though.

But then in 2nd Corinthians it says "Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, the old has passed away behold the new has come". 2nd Cor. 5:17.

    Thoughts?

This has been hashed over and over, but it is a good question. After salvation we do not have an old nature any more contrary to what some try and teach. 2Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. However we are left with the flesh to battle against, not a nature and the flesh is not going away in this life.
    So we are left on one hand with a desire to live for the Lord, our new nature, new wine has been put in old wineskins, and on the other hand we are living that out in this flesh which has its own desires, but we have been given the ability to control this;
1Cor 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].

If we sin after salvation we do so out of choice giving into the flesh instead of the spirit, not out of necessity. So yes we will have some sort of battle all the days of our lives, but as we learn how to take charge of the flesh the battle becomes more of a victory and our daily sinning should be much deminished.

The Temptation to Sin Will always be Around....

    ....take a look at 1 Peter 5:8-9; Eph. 6:10-18; and 1 John 1:6-10.

Some may disagree that these verses speak to the fact that believers are susceptible to sin after being saved. However, if you read them over closely, you will see that we are in a constant battle to remain on that narrow, difficult path to heaven and its narrow gate (Matthew 7:13-14).

Finally, take a long look at 1 Cor. 10:13. God will not allow us to be tempted and tried beyond that which we are capable of coming through.

God never promised us it would be smooth sailing from here to Him, but he did promise to provide for us and see us through the trails and tribulations we face in our trek down that path.

In short, we are going to be tempted. We may even stumble once in the while. However, 1 John 1:6-10 provide the countermeasure (antidote, remedy) to being bitten by sin. He does forgive when we go to Him and confess those sins.

Again, these are my interpretations to your question. Some may agree with me, while others may disagree. You need to prayerfully seek out what you believe God is saying. There are many other verses like those I provided you, so seek them out and know He will answer you! :godisgood:

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul :type:

Actually, as per the Apostle paul, we have our "old man sin nature" that we were born with, and we have the Hoy Spirit indewelling us as believers in Christ!

so we would be fighting this battle until either death or the Rapture or Second Coming!

We can have the victory in jesus though, as we daily yield/walk in the Spirit, and confess/repent when we do sin!

You are adding to scripture, AGAIN!. It never says we have an old man sin nature.

Romans 7: 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Paul makes it clear "sin" dwells in the believer, for when Paul wrote this he had been saved and had the Holy Spirit indwelling him. Yet he said in verses 17 and 20 that sin dwells in him. Therefore if it dwelt in him as a believer who had a new nature along with the old nature therefore does it (OSN) not also dwell in us as new creatures who have a new nature along with the old.
Most just don't want to call it a sin nature. So the desires and lust that come from within us and cause us to sin, that nature in us prior to salvation and thethe deeds we thought not sin but now as believers who know the word of God now know we sin and we know sin dwells in us. To me I will call it a sin nature for the natural man sins because it is in his nature and we don't lose that nature (sin dwells in us) but we have a new nature in us too.

    Then Paul made it very clear in Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

We were by nature the chidren of wrath. In our sin nature we were chidren of wrath, that nature is still in us but we are no longer children of wrath. We as Believers are now free from the bondage of that nature because of salvation.
Old things have passed away, that includes our bondage to the old sin nature our bondage to our old sinful ways is passed away. We are alive to the new Spiriutal Nature and have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, we are alive Spiritually but are still living in the fleshly body that conatains the Old sin nature.

1 John 1:8 If we say we have no "Share in Sin" (Hamaritia) (sin) this would be a desire to commit sin and share in commiting sin then we make God a liar.

I was taught and still belive this verse is talking about our old sin nature if we say we have no sin nature we make God a liar and the truth is not in us.

actually, it would appear that you are denying the scriptures!
God wants us to reckon ourselves dead to sin alive in Christ
    take up our cross daily
Live in our old nature/flesh will reap death
    Live in Spirit rewards

I have a new nature, 100% changed/regenerated. No "old nature" in me. To say I have both is denial of the 100% change. My soul is born again totally. No part old and part new. Not how God works!

I have an old sinful mind. Gets me into lots of problem. Old sinful thinking patterns, habits, etc. I am to "renew" my mind in immersion in the Word of God (Rom 12:2). Daily battle.

I have an old sinful flesh. Lusts and actions to be mortified and a continual fight until I die. In the resurrection (I Cor 15) this, too, will be transformed as my soul was, and born again.

    Looking forward to that.

But until then, I will renew my mind daily and battle the flesh daily, as God enables me and strengthens me in the battle.

As Christians, we have forgiveness and repentence through Jesus Christ. And He can take away those sins. If we really mean it.
Unlike non-believers whom hopefully will become believers in Him.

We have the 'same" nature residing within us we had at our physical birth and once born again, we also have the HS dwelling and residing in us...

Old ann New natures continue fighting, as per Apostle paul, and will be forever ended once at death/rapture/second coming, whichever comes first!

paul xcalls it the sin principle within us, the old man, we are commanded to kill it off daily, by submitting to God and His word!

MORE than just a mental aspect, it IS our old sin nature still abiding in this flesh...

Whether or not sin SHOULD be a lifelong battle, it is, because we are left with our sin nature despite being forgiven. Are we truly "cleansed" when we still have our sin nature and a constant battle going on within us because of that sin nature and the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us? The one that wins is the one we feed.
