Do ANY here Know/use Biblical Hebrew In Their Studies?

I am about to preach a 3 sermon series on Haggai next week to 200 teenagers!

In my prep... I translated the book to glean some helpful literary insights.

One of my favorite tools (since Hebrew grammar is not my forte but rather exegesis) is the OT Hebrew Parsing Guide (former prof was an author ). I like it b/c it speeds up the process of translation for me. W/ Hebrew, the grammar is not as important as word play, punning, repetition, cognate words, loan words, and literary criticism (cf. Bullinger's figures of speech, it is the standard).

 

I do, but am not nearly as proficient in it as Greek. When I am doing a lesson, sermon, or preparing something from the Old Testament my background (albeit limited) is helpful in getting into the text and seeing what is useful.

One of my primary tools is my Accordance software that makes identifying and working through the texts easier. There are some beautiful nuances to Hebrew and in many ways I enjoy preparing for OT materials more than Greek because of the nuances.

You can't go wrong with Gesenius' Grammar. It has been around for years and is a staple.

Here are the basic tools I have on my shelf for Hebrew studies:

A Grammar of Biblical Hebrew by Jouon

The lexicons I use are:
Brown-Driver-Briggs (by far the cheapest and still quite good)
Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament by Koehler and Baumgartner
A Theological Lexicon of the Old Testament by Jenni and Westermann

Hope that helps. I am far from being anything remotely considered a Hebrew scholar but can work my way through a page in the BHS with some time and the right resources.

 

Don't spend the money on books when purchasing Hebrew [or Greek] lexicons.
Put your money into digital programs that make the work of searching for the word and its form, as simple as a click!

All the sources mentioned so far are good, but when digitalized they become usable to the beginner.
