Know some creeds have Him descending into hell, was he really there during those days before His resurrection?

If anyone believes that Jesus went and preached to those who were in hell, are "borderline" holding to purgatory(sp?). Here's is the passage:

The Spirit that preached unto the spirits in prison are those sinful people who were alive at the same time Noah was. It states "while the ark was a preparing", so it had to be during Noah's days on earth. When Jesus died, His body was laid in the heart of the earth for three days and nights, but His body was resurrected before It could see any corruption(rotting) could have taken place. His Spirit/Soul went back to the Father, and when His Soul came back into His body, He was resurrected that morning, defeating satan, in the process. But Jesus never went to the place of torment. Hell is also used in reference to the grave, too. So if Jesus went to hell, it was His body that was laid in the heart of the earth, i.e. the grave, not the place with the flames.

The term even in the creeds were not written that Christ descended into the place of torment and everlasting separation from God but instead followed the KJV wording. The Bible tells us that Jesus' body was in the grave but His Spirit went straight to God - in heaven. Jesus did not see corruption nor did He see eternal torment.

    I'll Answer that Question......

......when I get a few minutes to actually sit with Him in heaven and have that long heart-to-heart talk about the many, many questions life has brought before me!

Annsni, John Calvin refutes the "well it just means the grave" contrivance in his Institutes:

However, there is no Biblical support for Jesus being in hell paying for our sins. In context, it means the grave - not hell.

I agree, Sister. If anyone holds to the opinion that Jesus went to hell and preached to those who were in prison, need to go buy some rosary beeds.......this doctrine is a fancy wording for purgatory, if you ask me.

What the word of God says.

His spirit returned to God who gave it.
Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he expired.

His soul was not left in Hades.
Acts 2:31 spake of the resurrection of the Christ,
that his soul was not left in hell,(Hades, Sheol the realm of the dead) (By Resurrection from the dead)

His body also resurrected from the tomb in which he was lain. Same verse.
neither his flesh did see corruption. (Resurrected to no more see corruption) Acts 13:34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

    By contrast.

Acts 2:29,34 Men [and] brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried,
For David is not ascended into the heavens: (This is fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus.) Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

Paraphrase 1 Cor. 15:35 How will the dead David be raised up and with what body will David come? The Answer Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Being David was speaking of the soul of Jesus the Christ in Psalm 16:10 from whence will his soul be raised?

Aw c'mon Willis, you know I ain't no calflick, but:

The story of Joseph, as a type of Christ, supports this (imo):

20 And Joseph`s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king`s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
21 But Jehovah was with Joseph, and showed kindness unto him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph`s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. Gen 39

......and the baker and the butler as types also agrees with the notion of Sheol as a hold for the wicked and the righteous.

21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh`s hand:
22 but he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them. Gen 40

.....and as Joseph was raised up out of that prison and was elevated in authority to second only to Pharaoh, so did Christ raise from the grave and ascend to sit at the right hand of the Father where He reigns today over His kingdom, and everyone must come to Him for their spiritual food.

41 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.
57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was sore in all the earth. Gen 40

Couldn't Joseph's "prison sentence" also refer to when Jesus' body was confined in the tomb for three days and nights? When His body was resurrected, It was freed from the confines of hell(tomb/grave), and He is now seated on the right hand of the Father in heaven.

    That's exactly the point:

.....being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; in which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison, 1 Pet 3:18,19

This is not a hill for me to die on. I personally believe there's insufficient data for us to understand everything we think we know about this. I'd love to know just what the message of this preaching was. Joseph's message to one was 'you're soon to be elevated out of this place', his message to the other was not so good.

And I believe that fits the type.

think the ONLY ones who would say jesus actually went to hell, and had to suffer there, are those in the heretical Word of faith movement!
They teach jesus died as a sinner on Cross, and had to go to hell, and had to get 'born again' there to be saved!

think, per Apostle peter, that Jesus went to "Abrhams Bosum", and proclaimed victory to those in the "good side" of hades at that time...

per Apostle paul, Jesus than ascended to heaven taking those peoples with Him!
