I am skeptical of the Farmer's Insurance ratings.

Farmer's Insurance rates Olympia, Washington as the safest place to list in the mid-sized category, yet Olympia sits in the path of Mt. Rainer, and even a very mild eruption (simple steam venting) will likely melt the ice cap on the mountain and cause a massive lahar which can take out most of the city in just a few minutes. The entire surface of the mountain underneath the ice has been substantially weakened by sulfuric acid caused by sulfur dioxide seeping from the mountain and reacting with the ice layer. If the ice melts, it is expected to take an enormous amount of soil and rock down the slopes and through Olympia.

Since the rankings allegedly take into account the potential and severity of natural disasters, I do not find their rankings credible.

There is a severe national security problem along the U.S.-Mexican border, with the drug cartels amping up their firepower and encroaching into the U.S. with murderous intentions.

If you want to get a better sense of the activity along the border, I suggest you watch an episode of Texas Drug Wars to see what Texas authorities are confronted with each day.

Interesting that the story didn't mention the place of manufacture of the rocket launcher.

Statistically, Rainier blowing in the next 20 years is probably about the same likelyhood as Jesus returning in the next 20 years.

Umm, I LIVE on the border. My house is less than nine miles from Mexico. And it's not the war zone that the media would make it appear to be. That was my point. Bad things happen everywhere, bad news gets more attention than good news, and DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ.

    They came from Libya?

In the mad rush to side with the "rebels" - who now are being shown to include Al Qaeda - no one bothered to consider securing the weapons in Gaddafi's stash.

Where do you call home, the Pentagon? You sound just like one of their propagandists.

My wife and I own a winter home just down the road from McAllen, in Weslaco. The entire Rio Grande Valley is very nice and very safe. :)

What about from the Texas Department of Public Safety?

There's more going on than meets the eye. Many things are camouflaged or go much further into Texas than just the border region.

I have friends who were born in Mexico and are naturalized citizens, but they have to be careful about talking about their relatives in Mexico because the drug cartels reps here in the U.S. will order the kidnapping of Mexican relatives to demand ransom from U.S. citizens. And even if ransom is paid, the relatives may not survive the ordeal.

Just because people are not shooting at YOU (at this time) does not mean that there isn't a war going on.

Most of those scenarios are highly unlikely to happen unless one is involved in the drug trade or hangs out with those who do.

Occasionally a truly innocent gets involved but it is rare.

A close family member just served on a jury where the convicted teen had been involved in a shootout on a Fort Worth street (fairly close to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, FYI) where three people were shot, two fatally. Two of those shot were uninvolved young women who were on a public street behind one of the cars of gang members, and the AK-47 rounds went past/through the intended vehicle into theirs. One of the women was pregnant and the round that hit her thankfully missed her child and was not ultimately fatal. The other young woman (actually a teenager about 15-16) died on the spot.

The fight was between rival drug gangs tied to these cartels.

About six weeks ago, I was heading home from work through my nice middle-class neighborhood and the street was blocked off due to police/FBI activity. I figure there was some sort of suicidal/hostage standoff thing going on and watched the local news to find out what had been going on. There was nothing on the news. I asked one of my police friends about it the next day and he informed me that the FBI was serving warrants on drug cartel members throughout North Texas. They were doing it quietly and the local media were not covering so as not to tip anyone off.

I have a number of friends who are police officers and I know a couple of FBI guys, and they can tell you a lot more about what is going on than what you see on television news or might hear from your neighbors. Most people live in denial because it simplifies their lives. They don't know what to look for or how to recognize what is happening until it very directly affects them.

Assuming that very few truly innocent people get hurt is wishful thinking. Certainly if you are involved in that lifestyle, you are more likely to be targeted, but these people can be very ruthless to those who inadvertently get in their way. Furthermore, drug cartels are predatory by their very nature. They seek to bring people into bondage through addictions or any other means necessary. They do not even have a live and let live ethic.

I noticed you had no comment on the Texas DPS's report. What is your opinion about that?
