Two years ago, America was importing about two thirds of its oil. Today, according to the Energy Information Administration, it imports less than half. And by 2017, investment bank Goldman Sachs predicts the US could be poised to pass Saudi Arabia and overtake Russia as the world's largest oil producer.
Places like Williston are the reason why.
"For many years, they knew that there was oil in that area, but the technology wasn't available to get it out," the town's mayor, Ward Koeser, tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz.
But in the last few years, advances in such technologies as "fracking" and horizontal drilling have made, by some estimates, as much as 11 billion barrels of oil available in the Bakken formation under North Dakota and Montana.

I am excited at the prospect of oil by fracking, though do have some concerns about long term effects on the environment. I suspect that these will
    Be addressed soon.

I've got a friend who works in the oil industry on the geology side of things (he basically goes and explores possible oil areas) and he says it is well known in the industry that we have more than enough oil to last us at least 500 years at current consumption rates. We just need to be able to go find it.

While I always posit that less oil consumption is the ideal, it is good to see us less dependent on foreign sources of our oil production. From what we, likely, have available here in North America (especially in the tar sands of Canada) we can out last the Saudis by several generations.

Ahhh, some good news for a change; I had read of this oil field but wasn't aware they were actually extracting from it. GOOD!

This is certainly good news. However, here in Houston, there has been consistent manufacturing work in the oil industry. I work as a machinist for a company that manufactures cranes for off shore oil platforms.
