In his well loved book, The Imitation of Chirst, Thomas á Kempis wrote that through meditative prayer we are moving toward:

    a familiar friendship with Christ.

What do you believe he meant by this?
How is this idea manifest in a person's life?

I want your opinion. I can read his. As the tutors say the student seminars at St. John's College in Annapolis, "I can read the author and what the experts say. I was to know what you think." If a person cannot express what they believe or think without quoting an expert or the author then ............................ I believe we should read and think on our own. We may or may not agree with the author.

A little more context would help with this guessing game.

I've downloaded this into e-sword and searched for the phrase you've given, but cannot find it.

What chapter, or heading/title page does it fall under (and perhaps paragraph under that)?

Hmmmm, I read this book many years ago. While I was going through a notebook I kept of quotes I liked I ran across the quote I entered in the OP. I gave my copy of the book away. I, like you, have checked online. There are many translations and many editions of this book. Also, like you, I have not found an edition that uses these words. Unfortunately I did not keep a full footnote on the quote in my notebook. Shame on me for that. If I run across this exact quote I will give you the full reference.

All-in-all, IMHO, it is a great book. One I believe that can be beneficial to all Christians.

In Chapter 1 paragraph 1, I did find this quote from the edition I downloaded from Gutenberg.org :

Yes. I've seen some phrases concerning friendship & c.

Although we cannot find the phrase exactly, I will now read this book. I think I may have read this once in college, but I am not totally certain.

Huh....that is just silly. You want opinions on a phrase someone else said with no context? What benefit does that have?

Given that this thread is in the Prayer Request and Praise forum, maybe we're supposed to pray about it?
