Yucca Mt Nuclear Waste

    During the "R" debate the subject of the Yuccca Mt nuclear waste came up.

    Ron Paul said it should be up the the State of Nev as to whether they want it or not. His basis is the 10th amendment.

    To me, nuclear waste is a national situation to deal with.
    Look at some facts. Pop of Nev is about 2.7 million in a State of 110,000 sq miles. That translates to about 24 people per sq mile.

    Subtract the five largest cities of about 1.2 million with about a total of 1,000 square miles leaves less than 10 people / sq miles

    Bottom line - Nevada may be the best place for America to put this nuclear waste.

    It's a necessary decision. There is no better place to put it. In this instance the state needs to allow the facility.

    If they refuse, in this instance, I would say the NRC has the authority to override them and build the facility. This is a major issue that needs resolution.

    What the heck?! No, the Federal Government does not have the authority to force Nevada to accept the other 49 states garbage. That is a preposterous and very unconstitutional notion. Those advocating it, what if the government decided the best place to put it was in your back yard? Sorry, but this is a serious affront to reason and our Republic...

    Good question, in fact they have been discussing it for some time.

    How bout the moon then as radiation builds we all can be radiated equally on planet rotisserie. :thumbs:

    Seriously, it is a serious question with few options thus far from what I've read.

    In the case of Yucca, the facility was going to be built on federal land. The state shouldn't have any say so in that case.

    In the state that makes a deal with the respective nuclear waste producers, in facilities and procedure detailed by that state.

    No, its a horrible point. Federal Forestland is not a method of circumventing the 10th amendment.

    I did not mean that it had trees. I was thinking that it was part of the Federal "National Forest and Grassland" holdings (many of which do not have trees, or grass...) of the U.S. Government.

    The National Forest and Grassland holdings includes several desert areas. Maybe you should write them and tell them to change the name.
