During my early years as a christian I was like a sponge...soaking in as much teaching as I could get. Not just learning from my pastor and other church teachers, but also from tons of radio and TV teaching ministries.

Charles Stanley, J. Vernon McGee, Jack Hayford, Chuck Smith, Chuck Swindall, ect, and several local broadcasts.

Adrian Rogers was one of my favorites. He didnt stray off into perifural issues during his teaching like some do.

He just zeroed in on what he was teaching, and he gave it to you strait. I Look forward to thanking him when I arive in heaven one day.

Just curious, what kind of a program did his church have to help the poor?

I have listened to Dr. Rogers several times. He didn't do much for me.

Having said that, the title of "Prince of Preachers" was originally given to Spurgeon. Many people have used attributes given to Spurgeon and applied it to Rogers. In my opinion, Spurgeon leaves Rogers in the dust.

Celebrating his or anyone's Birthday in this manner after their death is borderline idolatrous.

Here in Memphis, there is at least one church doing a B-Day party for Rogers and I find it atrocious. I don't get it... I didn't know Rogers all that well, but I did know him and even though my philosophy of ministry is radically different from his was, I can say with near certainty that he would not be approving of this garbage.

Just guessing, but I imagine your bias for Spurgeon is due to the fact that Rogers despised TULIP.

However, in regard to overall giftedness in the pulpit he would be every much as equal as Spurgeon. In regard to volumnous writing Spurgeon stands superior to almost anyone. You need to listen to him a little more.

There is a great difference in celebrating what a great man of God has done and idoltary. You sound a little envious of Roger's ministry to me.

He happens to often be on a station I listen to when I leave work. I'm sure he was a good man, but he used too many prooftexts and didn't exegete. As a result, you get poor interpretation too often with him.

As was noted, Spurgeon has long been considered the Prince of Preachers.

BTW,the quote from your signature line is actually a quote from the grandfather of Spurgeon. Spurgeon was uncharacteristically late in preaching and his grandad was holding forth. When the grandson was being handed the baton,of sorts that's when the famous line was said.

James White took a sermon of Mr. Rogers on Romans 9 and item by item demonstrated the errors of A.R. per Scripture.

This was when Rogers was living BTW.

I'll take Rogers over Spurgeon when it comes to biblical understanding. I know Spurgeon is more widely known and is almost worshiped by many Calvinists, but popularity means nothing. Look at Joel Osteen, he's popular, but he's wrong.

    See, Rip!!!

Just as England has had more than one Prince through the centuries----its not a crime or a sin for the Christian world to have more than one Prince of Preachers

As for my signature line----I'm just quoting what I heard Dr. Rogers say in one of his sermons----I reckon if he stole the line from Spurgeon he'll have to answer to the Lord Jesus for that theft------now that is out in the open---reckon where Spurgeon stole the quote from???????

One analogy that Dr. Rogers used often was the analogy line that went something like "You'd have a better chance of damming up Niagra Falls with toothpicks than to . . . . . ."-----I liked Dr. Rogers----just like guys here like Spurgeon----whatever winds your clock!!!

No, Rogers was a great speaker, few are his equal. I did not see him as tremendously great expositor and he lacked much logic. I have heard Rogers many times and felt his sermons tended somewhat on the moralistic side of things and was theologically light. Not that he didn't do expository preaching, but that I think his ability lacked vastly in comparison to Spurgeon. Oh, there are some great nuggets in his sermons, you can learn from his sermons, and I respect him as a man of God. Yet, there is a logic in Spurgeon's work that is tremendous but lacking in Rogers' sermons.

Now, as for public speaking ability, Rogers is phenomenal. In my work, I have heard and worked with several internationally recognized public speakers. Rogers could have made millions as a secular public speaker.

When I lived in Memphis, I didn't attend Roger's church. Not because I was reformed, I was not reformed and I became reformed after I left Memphis. I didn't attend because I desired more meat and greater depth theologically. So, I went to a church that had a very strong spiritual focus where a Sunday School teacher was very indepth theologically.

So, I admired Spurgeon long before I became reformed and while I respected Rogers I did not believe he offered what Spurgeon did.

Question, how much of Spurgeon have you read? You are the first person, reformed or otherwise, who would say that Spurgeon lacked biblical understanding. As for Rogers, I know of few theologians who would say he was a great theologian, but few would deny Spurgeon was anything but a great one.
