Anyone agree with me that these new social medias have engendered a anti-intellectual culture in todays church? I think it was Piper in his latest book "think" that mentioned this. I look at many posts by my friends on FB and many are not very intellectual. For some reason what I post on FB hardly ever gets any replies. Maybe I am too much of a thinker and too intellectual for that atmosphere. Forums like this one tend to be more geared towards intellectual discussion. Anyone else having the same experience on FB? Many are just plain silly and never serious about anything. Humor seems to be what many of the younger generation is attracted to.

Yes. I agree. I am not an intellectual by any stretch of the imagination, but I did learn how to read and use grammar correctly in school.
My sense of humor seems to go over people's heads sometimes too. Of course, it could just be that I'm weird.

We are lingering at the threshold of a new intellectual dark age perpetuated by our own nihilistic narcissism.

If you want to get replies from non-thinkers then you'll have to type things that are on their intellectual level. I wonder how the apostle Paul would have approached them. "I Bcme all things 2 all ppl tht I mite win thm 2 Christ..."

Perhaps don't think before you type? My sister-in-law has that down to a fine art. "I got out of bed today...." :tongue3:

Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back. While you are at it don't break your back bending over to condescend to peons. Good grief!

Did you ever stop to think that forums might serve a different purpose for some than it does for you? Or does your big head get in the way of seeing the forest for the trees? The best thing you can do is sit back, take a half a baby aspirin and .......get over yourself.

    God Bless

Facebook is not a forum, firstly. It is a social networking site, designed to keep friends/family in touch. As far as fostering an atmosphere of anti-intellectualism, it is you who is a fish out of the water there. It is an atmosphere wherein people understand that it is allowed to be informal, butcher the English language, and just have fun staying in touch. You would think it odd if I came to your house, saw you in a sweatshirt and jeans, and said something like, "I am afraid that you are fostering and atmosphere of casuality." However, this is what you are doing for Facebook.

A post on Facebook is not meant to be a revelation or an astounding thought, although it is accepted if that is what you want to do. But some people just want to get updates on what their friends are doing for the evening.

Also, many posts are made from mobile devices now. In this day and age, it is acceptable to shorten your words/sentences when using a phone, a hold over thought from the days when you had to hit one key on the phone several times in order to get the letter you wanted.

I know of several people who post in "leet speak", yet when you meet them in person are very capable of carrying on an intelligent conversation.
