δυναμις dunamis often simply meaning "ability" thus translated at times "power".

How many times have I heard people say, we get our word dynamite from this word. Therefore this is an explosive kind of power (Acts 1:8 for an example).

Of course there are multiple fallacies going on. But the one that is most obvious is that the Greeks never had anything close to something that resembled dynamite. So how in the world could the power be dynamite? Maybe dynamic (whatever that means).

Christians... stop using anachronistic logic and English root etymologies to prove a definition of a Greek word!!! You sound stupid.

It sure is good that we have you around to correct all our ignorant uses of bible terms. It is also too bad that we don't all speak Greek. I guess we will just have to muddle along with our English bibles.

What did I just tell you a few hours ago Robert? Stop posting your stuff unless it can be informative and edifying. But I am slightly surprised you didn't slam Calvinists in your post this time.

Do want to remain in the dark or would you rather be informed? Greektim is performing a service for which you should be appreciative. Of course Barr,Silva and Carson might have lent him a hand.

Good point. One doesn’t have to be a Greek scholar to understand that people will twist the Greek to force their definitions just like they do the English, there is no difference. What gets me is the same “Greek scholars” pulling out this “elitist card” to condescend. Especially them Calvinist, eh Rippon... :tongue3:

    Exactly.

Any time he is corrected, which is quite often, he comes along with some cynical slam.

    Talk about being unteachable.

This is who he is. It's generally followed by qaf with the same type of reply that adds nothing but cynicism and negativity. What a reflection of their character.

Good post Greektim. May the wise look in and learn from it? Let the rest do otherwise.

I "call" you on your treatment, dismissiveness and derision that you direct toward any who do not agree with you and you call "character" into question. That speaks volumes. I have yet to see YOU offer your "correction" in anything but negativity and derision. Simply ending your post with "Peace" just doesn't "cut it".

Greektim comes here with his condesending attitude toward those who don't know Greek; now P4t comes to his defense when called on it. The bible says something about the blind leading the blind, doesn't it?

Check out the past and you will see that P4t cannot stand it that I am vocal about my dislike for Calvinism.

This is especially true when verses like John 3:16 is brought up. There is nothing wrong with education, but when this supposed education stands in the way of understanding the plain truth of the scripture, it can be dangerous. You will find that too often Calvinists believe that an advanced education is required to properly understand the truths of God's Word. I oppose this and always will.

The real truth is that in their eyes no one can understand the bible unless they see it through the eyes of Calvinism. Some have even claimed that Calvinism is the gospel, just ask Aaron. To my simple way of thinking this is idolatry. Thank God that he looks beyond these ignorant statements and loves us in spite of ourselves.

I find it hypocritical that you are allowed to critique views that you "dislike" yet when I critique a practice (not a people) who abuse Greek, you then critique me rather than my view.

Notice, I said nothing about "those who don't know Greek." My critique is for those who don't know Greek but abuse it by saying something they have either heard or something like that. If you have no problem with people abusing the Biblical languages of the Bible, then we can debate that. Otherwise, stop being so hypocritical.

Just an observation...are you really the one to be saying "Stop posting your stuff unless it can be informative and edifying" or did someone hack your account?

    Robert,

I honestly think you "misread" the intention of Greektim. I did not see his OP as condescending to those of us who are not greek scholars, (myself included) unless of course we are talking about the use of the greek alphabet in mathematics. :)

I think his point is valid, that we should be intellectually cautious about assigning "vernacular" meanings to things. Now that is not to say, that intelligent people cannot disagree on message, interpretation and meaning.

Use of the word 'power' in Acts 1:8 perked my interest. What other word would you have used? For example:

    dunamis
King James Word Usage - Total: 120
    power 77, mighty work 11, strength 7, miracle 7, might 4, virtue 3, mighty 2, miscellaneous 9

The dunamis of 1:8 is conveyed to the apostles through the baptizo of 1:5. Would you agree baptizo to be the most non-translated Greek word? Why is that?

    baptizo
King James Word Usage - Total: 80
    baptize (76), wash 2, baptist 1, baptized + (2258)&version=kjv 1

Apology accepted, you are most certainly forgiven.

My apologies to you for conveying elitism. I do battle with pride.
