    I wouldn't vote for Newt, period. Cain can find a better running mate and if he can't he'll lose the vote I'm considering casting for him.

    They did get along well, didn't they? Their debate was just a few minutes from here but I watched on the TV. When the primaries happen if Mr. Cain continues to dominate the poles I will vote for him and if Newt teams with him I'll still vote for him.

    That would not happen as they are both from Ga, and the Constitution does not allow for the home state to vote for a Pres/Veep from the same state.

    But in addition, I agree with menageriekeeper.

    Salty I didn't know that the veep & pres couldn't be from the state. Gotta link?

    (course I didn't know eye of Newt came from Georgia either soooo.... :D )

    Thye can be from the same state but the state cannot vote for them if they carry the state.

    Here is how it is;
    Yes, they could be from the same state.
    However, the 12th Amendment does say that electors may not vote for a President from their state and a Vice President also from their state.
    Therefore if running mates from the same state carried their home state, there could be a problem. The electors would probably vote for their presidential candidate and vote for some unknown for vice-president. This could cause the vice-presidential candidate to fail to get a majority.

    Article II Section 1: (The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not lie an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves

    Now, Cain and Newt could legally run together, but the electors from Ga, could only vote for one of them - unless one of them pulled a Cheney (2000). Suppose they did run - and the electoral vote was extremely close - and the votes from Ga went to a 3rd candidate - then the Veep election would go to the US Senate....
