President says "tax the rich".

    The nation is still recovering from a crushing recession that sent unemployment hovering above nine percent for two straight years. The president, mindful of soaring deficits, is pushing bold action to shore up the nation's balance sheet. Cloaking himself in the language of class warfare, he calls on a hostile Congress to end wasteful tax breaks for the rich. "We're going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share," he thunders to a crowd in Georgia. Such tax loopholes, he adds, "sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary – and that's crazy."

    Preacherlike, the president draws the crowd into a call-and-response. "Do you think the millionaire ought to pay more in taxes than the bus driver," he demands, "or less?"

    The crowd, sounding every bit like the protesters from Occupy Wall Street, roars back: "MORE!"

    The year was 1985. The president was Ronald Wilson Reagan.

    I do not want to add more people paying taxes, I want to add more people paying nothing in taxes. Reagan is great in some ways, but I strongly disagree with him on many issues.

    What Reagan did, though, is also noteworthy. He did not call for higher taxes, he reduced the rates. Yet, he also closed some loop holes. As well, the Democrats agreed to cut the budget, but they never did. Today, Republicans are against raising taxes but are for eliminating loop holes.

    My contention, though, is that I eventually want as many people paying nothing in income taxes as possible. So, when any President says people don't pay enough, I just chalk it up to another President who is all about getting more money for government. Reagan was probably better than most, but he is not the person I turn to on everything.

    Let's liberate as many from taxes as possible.

    When the government starts cutting numerous government give-away programs - then there will be no need to raise taxes.

    For example -

    1. The pgm that got away

    2. 1 billion for unemployed homeowners

    3. land give a way

    4. 14,322 give-away

    5. According to the Government Accountability Office there’s over $460 Billion Dollars Available.

    just google government give away programs.


    I agree with Ruiz - everyone should pay taxes

    lets start with 1% tax on all income - NO loopholes

    then only spend what we take in.

    My point is not that I think everyone should pay taxes, but that I want more people paying no taxes. Yes, getting rid of loopholes is wise, but eliminating as many taxes as possible is my goal.

    Who has given more big companies tax breaks, bonuses, bailouts, etc.......the democrats, or republicans ?

    I think it is a close race, but Dems win these last few years.

    BTW, I just noticed where you live. My wife was raised in Dillon Montana which is not in your town, but I am guessing about 3 hours away.

    But Reagan closed loopholes, ended monopolies, and CUT the highest personal tax rates.

    The O/P is a little disingenuous.

    To compare Reagan's proposed changes in taxation on the wealthy to Obama's proposed changes is shockingly misleading. Reagan LOWERED tax rates on the wealthy and closed loopholes and eliminated deductions. Obama wants to RAISE taxes on the wealthy.

    It was called the Tax Reform Act of 1986. The Senate approved it 97-3. I don't see Obama's program coming anywhere near the landslide victory that Reagan's program received.

    Furthermore, I don't recall Obama offering to close loopholes and eliminate deductions. He did form a blue ribbon panel headed by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson that made recommendations to close loopholes and eliminate deductions but naturally Obama ignored it.
