According to articles I have read, all Butterball turkeys are slaughtered according to Halal, sharia law. Animals are slaughtered by slicing the jugular and carotid, death is not instantaneous.

According to "kosher" practices, the animal slaughtered should be done so in the fastest way possible making every effort to minimize the pain and suffering of the animal.

Apparently, no such "concern" is offered in Halal.

This makes me SICK TO MY STOMACH!!

WHY IN THE WORLD is this insanity allowed to continue??

If practitioners of Islam want to come to our country they have every right to come.

But they MUST adhere to OUR laws!!!

Why is Butterball allowing this to countinue???

WE HAVE ANIMAL CRUELTY LAWS IN THIS COUNTRY!!!!!

OK let me shed some light on all this.....first 2 of my uncles were in the in the butchering & poultry industry. also I studied the kashrut / kosher process for humanly & instantly & as painless as possible killing animals which dictates the cutting of the carotid artery. Also read the transcripts of the suicides of the Jews @ Masada....same process....IE, the slitting of the carotid artery.

    Personally I prefer a .45 1911 Automatic....but thats me.

    Have a Great Thanksgiving all!

I would not debate the method but the reason. I will not buy any of their products because they are related to the Muslim faith which is a cruel and evil religion. Thank you for the article

I agree they MUST adhere to our laws, but I think it is even deeper than that. They (pick your group) should not expect the norms of our nation to be adjusted to accommodate their preferences. I can assure, such respect would never be granted in most predominantly muslim nations toward Christians and or Jews. One should practice their own religious preferences within the context of their community and not expect the "kafir" nation to accommodate them.

I eat Butterball turkeys because they taste the best. I could care less what their religious beliefs are in my deciding to buy a turkey.

Do you check the religious background of every company you buy from?

I don't go "looking for it", but when I come across it and I am able to do otherwise, then I do. I understand where you are "going". Capitulation to religious minorities seeking accommodation in a land that is not predominantly of their faith is a "chain yanker" for myself. If the slaughter practice was intentionally quick and sought to alleviate as much "pain" for the animal, then it might be a bit, just a bit more tolerable for myself.

The reason I will not buy them any more is I do not want to be one of those who helps fund anything Muslim. I am afraid that most Christians do not have a clue as to what the Muslim community is up to.

Thanks, I'm looking a little more into this. It looks like I've seen two issues. One is that the slaughter process isn't quick. The second is that the turkey has been sacrificed to "allah."

Now, I've am skeptical that this is fully true. News stories that start with blogs seem to have a reputation of altering the facts. At least in my experience.

Here is a video. I'm not sure who Rachel Maddow is, but being on msnbc says a lot to me. However, she has a response from Butterball that says that turkeys in the US are not halal.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/vp/45424172#45424172

"Our domestic products are not halal certified and thus, do not require any additional on-package labeling. As is common within the industry, when we started to export our products overseas we applied for and met the necessary requirements of halal processing for a segment of our business. Butterball whole turkeys are produced in a manner than meets those requirements if needed, but only turkeys exported to specific countries are certified halal."

1:27 is the part where she speaks of this, though the first part is interesting.

I shall continue with my research, however, what is the thoughts of Paul and and meet offered to idols? I Cor 8.

OK..I just spoke with a consumer affairs representative from Butterball which can be found here http://www.butterball.com/contact-us

The representative told me just now that it is impossible for them to be Halal certified because Halal certification requires that the birds be processed by hand and a prayer said over the bird. Also the FDA will not allow everything involved with Halal certification to happen.

However, in the FDA regulated processing of these birds there are some parts of the process that meet Halal qualifications that Butterball uses to emphasize to overseas markets. But in doing this no change was made in their processing of these birds. They just simply choose emphasize those things already being done in the processing of these birds to markets that would appreciate them.

The representative further stated that it is impossible for butterball turkeys to be Halal certified because of the way they process it and because of FDA regulations.

There is no Islamic words said over the birds.

If slitting a bird's throat is cruel, ya'll just didn't grow up on a farm. My parents preferred chopping the entire head from the body (which caused the birds to flip around the yard like zombies). It's just life. Ya wanna eat meat, ya gotta slaughter the animal it comes from. If you don't like how its done? Eat your veggies!

As far as prayers, I'm with Paul on this one. We gave thanks for the bird and sides that surrounded it and considered ourselves blessed!

The method of slaughter is the preferred one in the Bible, so that in itself would make me more comfortable with the brand rather than being shocked and appalled. I wasn't aware that very many mass companies still did this. When I bought my turkey this year, I checked out the company's slaughter methods and they also bleed them out, although they stun them first. They take care to ensure the birds are healthy and not frightened during the process. (I went organic) This is good.

However, now that I know that the Butterball brand is directly supporting a religion that I consider to be abhorrent and a shameful blot on humanity, I'll do everything possible to avoid supporting them with my purchases.

I don't purposely go about checking on the religious background of every producer of every product I buy, but I do try to be careful about my decisions. When something like this comes along, it really helps. I do not want to knowingly support things I do not belief in. I don't want to unknowingly do it either, but that's pretty difficult to figure out when you live in the city where you can't be as self-sufficient or in an area where shopping choices are limited.

BTW, I'd encourage everyone to go organic with their turkeys. Until I tasted one from a local hunter and now the one from OP, I thought I didn't like turkey. Now I know I love it! Butterball turkeys taste HORRIBLE once you know what a proper turkey really looks and tastes like.
