sexual orientation is raised at hearing

    Dec 17, 7:51 PM (ET)
By PAULINE JELINEK and DAVID DISHNEAU

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) - The young Army intelligence specialist accused of leaking government secrets spent his 24th birthday in court Saturday as his lawyers argued his status as a gay soldier before the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" played an important role in his actions.

Lawyers for Pfc. Bradley Manning began laying out a defense to show that his struggles in an environment hostile to homosexuality contributed to mental and emotional problems that should have barred him from having access to sensitive material.

Manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of sensitive items to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, including Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, State Department cables and a military video of a 2007 American helicopter attack in Iraq that killed 11 men, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver.

This is not surprising. Wicked sodomites have a history of excessive depravity in many areas. Our country is rapidly bringing the Lord's words to fruition, "As in the days of Lot..."

He his worth the price Jesus paid. Instead of complaining and condemning them, give them Jesus.

    Well said. And true.

I don't read this so much as the young man trying to use his sexual orientation as an excuse, but as his lawyers trying to do anything to keep their client from justice.

    It even sounds "lawyerish".

His lawyers wouldn't argue that if their client objected to it.

Excuse me if I'm wrong but I hear:

"I'm not guilty because the Army should have known I had mental issues due the the "trauma" of not being able to express my sexual identity. They should have known and kept me from temptation."

    Yeah right. <sarcasm>

One would think pro-gay groups would shun this guy. Why in the world would they think that sexual orientation is grounds for treason?

It's an argument that makes no sense. This guy is going to be in the brig for a long time.
