1/12 issue of National Geographic has a big story on twins. I have been reading NG for 60 years and they go out of their way not to bad mouth anyone - to see some good in everyone.

"When they looked at the data on twins' intelligence, Bouchard's team reached a controversial conclusion: For people raised in the same culture with the same opportunities, differences in IQ reflected largely differences in inheritance rather than in training or education. Using data from four different tests, they came up with a heritability score of 0.75 for intelligence, suggesting the strong influence of heredity. This ran counter to the prevailing belief of behaviorists that our brains were blank slates waiting to be inscribed by experience. More alarming to some, the suggestion that intelligence was linked to heredity evoked the disgraced theories of the eugenics movements of the early 20th century in England and the United States, which had promoted improvement of the collective gene pool through selective breeding. The far-left groups on campus were trying to get me fired," Bouchard says.

"The researchers also questioned how much parenting affects intelligence levels. . . ."

The story verifies the truth of "The Bell Curve" without mentioning it. Maybe Hitler's BIG error was that the Japanese and the Jews are the "master race." <G>

You took the words from my mouth.

Both have tended to believe their own race to be superior to others.

There's definitely not anything inferior about either of them, except that they were pagan and lacked the blessings of God.

Your personal experience is counter to their findings though.

You claim to have a MENSA IQ but were a career cop doing the least amount required to keep your union job.

    Hardly "high class".

    How do account for that?

I've believed this for years about the heritability of intelligence. There's a lot of evidence that intelligence is related, in large part, to neural wiring and other physical traits of the brain. Of course, there is some environmental influence, but that's mostly related to proper nutrition, etc.

Also, just for the record, I don't believe in a "master race".

    Wealth is a mental construct

    >How do account for that?

I am a lazy smart person who was always satisfied to live below my income level. I was smart enough to get a good paying union job with a fixed benefit retirement. I learned that life was much more pleasant when working for someone else. I was always happy to let someone else die with the most toys or with more toys than I had. "All I want is a room somewhere, far away from the cold night air, with one enormous chair," and I have it.

How is that any different than the attitude of people who would rather let the state support them instead of working for a living?

You know - the people that you refer to as "trash".

Where in the Bible are we instructed to be greedy and stupid? You one of those "primative" baptists?

Why are you attempting to misdirect the conversation?

I am asking how you are any different than anyone else that you lump into a class which you entitle as "trash"?

Or do you also consider yourself to be "trash" and a member of the low class?

I agree. Genetics is the primary reason for intelligence. It seems rather obvious when you think about it. Our hair color, our eye color, our skin color, etc. come from our genetics makeup. Just like cholesterol, whether high or low, comes primarily from genetics. Sure plays a part, but primarily, I believe, in our attitude toward learning, or like or dislike of reading, etc. There are brilliant people who come from poor neighborhoods and there are people who are not so smart who come from well to-do neighborhoods. What people do or do not do with their 'smarts' is another subject.

That is funny. You may be onto something there. Thanks for the post.

So, do you think is this why blacks , on average, do so much poorer in school than whites? Which is it? Genetics or attitude?

    Just askin'.

Sorry, but I ascribe to a genetics + environment point of view. There are plenty of people who are genetically intelligent, but have no environmental support to properly cultivate that intelligence. I know of several people who had great potential, but were stifled by social influences, or even by backwards-thinking teachers (one person who, in 8th grade, was told by a teacher that "no one gets a 100," so he made the conclusion there was no need to try if he couldn't achieve a perfect score, and that influenced him through the rest of high school).

That is a "chicken or egg" problem. If IQ is 75% genetics then it is most likely 25% attitude and/or nurture.

ANYWAY, probability is only properly applied to groups and never to individual group members.

A chimpanzee could probably be raised up and trained to operate the controls to a nuclear reactor.
