I'll let you be the judge as to whether freedom of speech was breached by Maher's comment about Tim Tebow (I think we would all say that it is Maher's right, but...come on, enough is enough!).

As a Christian, I am offended, but, almost anything and everything Bill Maher does under the guise of comedy offends me. I guess that I dislike him almost as much as he despises Christians; with the difference being, I am required to "pray" for him (which I do), while he "preys" on the values and lifestyle of Christians with ill-timed, foul mouthed absurdity!

Still, he has a soul that needs to be saved, and only God can do that. Can you even begin to imagine Bill Maher, born-again, on the side of believers? Now that would an earth-shattering miracle. Of course, that is the what God is in the of doing...

Many have already voiced their disdain with HBO, and others are boycotting HBO. What would you do after knowing how far Maher went to elicit a laugh???

Due to the objectionable nature of what Maher said about Tim Tebow's poor performance in Saturday's game against the Buffalo Bills (12/24/11), you will have to look it up, and decide if you want to read it.

I am simply asking for your views on whether today's comedians have taken humor beyond their right to free speech???

Simple answer? No, unless their comments endanger others they are well within the bounds of freedom of speech.

Abhorrent? Disgusting? Blasphemous? Offensive? All of that and more, but not beyond his rights to say it.

Didn't Christ tell us this is what would happen? We don't need laws to protect from what He told us to expect.

He may be all these things and more, but why do we expect the world to honour our Saviour?

Freedom of speech was intended to allow the people to speak out against their government not slander or mock another. In my opinion this does not fall under freedom of speech. In fact this is very close if not actually a violation under hate speech laws although it is disguised by calling it humor.
I think it is good that Mr. Maher is prayed for. I also think it would be good if he was sued for a large sum of money as that is just about the only thing that will put the breaks on his type of slander and mockery.
So no I do not believe that the founding fathers intended free speech to include slander and mockery of another or the degrading of their religious beliefs.
The problem is that Christians get offended when someone like Maher does what he does, and they should, towards their Lord and yet many call Muslims "towel heads." We want the right to claim free speech when slandering a Muslim, but do not want it applied to us. So again I do not think this is permitted under the law as the law was intended by the founding fathers, but if we are going to apply it across the board many of us would have to tape our mouths shut or face prison.

Honestly, what Christians have HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, or TMC in their homes? Soft-core porn is shown on those channels quite regularly. Literal porn - I'm not exaggerating. And if parents don't know that their children are up watching it while they are sleeping and if parents don't understand that their teenagers can circumvent the parental locks, themselves, then the said parents don't need to be raising children.

I'm not a prude by any means, but I don't have those channels in my home. Bill Maher and the rest of the world can say whatever they want to about Tim Tebow. The rest of the world already mocks Christians as it is. Why is this news?

As for Bill having freedom of speech? This nation, long ago, decided that freedom of speech meant that you can say whatever you want, whenever you want, regardless of the pain, humiliation, political downfall, or public annoyance that it causes. And the comedians have been over-the-top vulgar and trashy for decades.

The old adage that "I don't like what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" was coined by someone who really WASN'T offended by what the other guy/gal had to say. The person who said this truly had his/her head in the clouds and wasn't really listening to the person.

We have this unfortunate circumstance as a result of freedom of speech.

I watched the video of Bill Maher and Bill O'Reilly going at it. I found it interesting how Maher began an attack upon the account of Noahs Ark, mocking it, slandering the story, God, the Bible, all of it. One of his statements is that others believe it was literal, and his implication is that those who do are imbeciles.

O'Reilly chimed in and said no one believes that (Noahs Ark being literal). Really? O'Reilly seemed to claim to being a believer (in a sense) and offered a defensive stance for the Bible and/or Christianity, sort of. To me, and this is my opinion, it seemed O'Reilly's belief was more of a "just in case it's true" type of belief. That's just the feeling I got and I don't believe that such a belief, if true, would be salvific. I think we are to believe with all of our heart, but I'm certain there is an apology held by someone here that would defend this as being salvific.

As a side note, Peter believed in the literalness of the Ark; 1 Peter 3:20, and our Lord Jesus Christ spoke of this Himself; Matthew 24:37,38; Luke 17:26, 27.

I've not paid much if any attention to Maher in the past. If someone would have shared his attitude and beliefs with me, I would not have known otherwise. Now I have due reason to avoid listening to him. He'll be a believer someday, but I hope it's not a day that is too late.

    - Peace

No, while we may not like what they have to say they have an absolute right to say it. If we limit their speech, let's not complain when our speech is limited in regards to homosexuality being a sin, etc.

No, they haven't. The question is oxymoronic.

Is it possible to have too much fun?
Is it possible to have a bed that is too comfortable?
Is it possible to be too handsome?

Don't watch comedians that offend you. Exercise your freedom of choice.

If I were Tim Tebow, I would not take it personal. Maher hates Jesus and will direct his vitriol toward anyone who claims to love Christ.

I will always support Bill Maher's "right" to free speech, because the door can easily swing both ways.
If we go down that road of censorship; there will be no turning back.

I am a total Tebow fan....and I have the utmost respect for the way
he handles all the nasty and negative comments.

I don't think I could handle it with the same grace, but I know he
does it for the sake of his testimony to millions....

Why would anyone care what Bill Maher said ?

But I will say it was wonderful to see Tom Brady take it to the Broncos a couple weeks ago. In their house. Does Tebow only point at the sky or pose-pray when he wins ?

    Not a Tim Tebow fan.

They miked Tebow for one of the games...He gives God the glory whether
he wins or loses...He was praying and saying "Lord, whether we win or
lose, help me to give YOU the glory" and then he was singing "Our God
is an awesome God" while he was warming up.

How can you NOT like him??

Our rights have already been infringed - any time you talk about homosexuality, it is now termed "hate speech" and it can get you arrested
    in many many places.....!

The cynic in me wonders just how genuine his faith is. Many times the loudest amongst us are simply doing it for show. There's plenty of Christian players in the NFL that give God glory in a humble and personal way.

While I don't like this law, it doesn't do what you said ("any time you talk about homosexuality, it is now termed "hate speech" and it can get you arrested"). Please show me any instance of someone being arrested under this new law because the talked about homosexuality.
