As we had some questions in our membership on it, so pastor spent last 2 weeks refuting him in the Sunday School!

Not yet, but I'm still on the honemoon and haven't really started in on any doctrinal teaching.

My upcoming series in 1 Peter will likely raise some issues that need to be hashed out.

I believe a church that properly teaches Scripture most likely will not have to deal with questions about him because the congregation already knows the answer. They may not agree and instead agree with Bell but the stance of the church will be clear.

It just fit into our scheduled teaching, as the pastor was going through a survey of essential theology/doctrines, and we were up to studying the concept of hell!

From the Mars Hill Bible Church website.

The word theology comes from two Greek words: “theos”, meaning “God”, and “logos”, meaning “word”. So theology is words about God.

When we put to words what we believe about God, we discover that God has been writing a story of hope and redemption for all the world. This story is a movement from creation to new creation, and God has given us a role to play in that story, in the restoration of our relationships with God, each other, ourselves, and creation.

Since story is central to our belief about God, our words about God–our theology–exists in the form of a narrative.

Our ability to grow together as a church stems from what we hold central—Jesus and our commitment to the biblical narrative. By the grace of God, this story becomes our story and we perpetuate it by the power of the Holy Spirit, as we serve our local and global community, and invite others to participate in this pursuit of Jesus together. Demonstrating a harmony of both orthodoxy [right thinking] and orthopraxy [right living/practice], this narrative seeks to not only guide our thoughts and minds, but the way we live our lives. To highlight these key themes in the biblical narrative and offer direct insight into the theology that is central to our teaching, leadership, and ministries, footnotes have been added throughout.

    ...ask me if I'm impressed.

No. I don't know about my fellow church members, but I have not even heard of Robb Bell. What (briefly :) ) does this man believe that needs refuting?

he believes that the church has misunderstood the teaching on hell, as he teaches that the Bible supports that the Love of God in the cross of Christ will compel ALL to eventually get saved by god...

that jesus death NOT for atonement for sins , but as an example of ultimate love towards us...

So god will "love" all people to get to heaven, that some will go to hell, but is a temp holding place, as the love of God will eventually compel even hardest heart sinner to receive Love of God and come to God to get saved!

he teaches Universalism, but refusing to label it that, andhas hell as purgeotory place instead!

Our church doesn't preach AGAINST Bell, or any other teacher with whom we disagree.

Our pastor simply teaches the truth as he understands it.

    BIG difference.

Sort of like banks first make sure tellers are uber familiar with REAL currency.

They don't focus a lot of time on what makes a fake bill a fake. You don't have to know all about fake bills, just the real ones. That makes a fake stand out immediately.

Pastor says we can preach and teach on issues and people and run around putting out brush fires, or preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified. We choose the latter.

Preaching the Word refutes any erroneous doctrine. As Paul Wrote:

He is from the defunct emerging church. Lots of new age/old age philosophy that no one can know the truth of scripture and that it is arrogant claiming to.

Forgetting that their philosophy 'that no one can know the truth of scripture' is their truth claim and equally as arrogant

actually, the Bible sets out that we can and should do BOTH of those, as we need to realise that most of the NT Epistles were written to address to an extent the 'Robb Bells" of those times!

Just a curious "non-scientific" poll, how many here have read the book by Bell?

Bell is so far off my church's radar that they might not bring it up except if I do. I have talked about the move towards universalism in theology, but not Rob Bell specifically.

Think my church stays up on current trends due to mainly be involved in youth ministry, and our associate Pastor likes to keep his flock updated with those things!
