Years ago, at an ordination questioning time, a young preacher was asked by a visiting Bible scholar this question. If you were asked the same question, how might you answer it and why?

    Scenario and then question:

You are to be stranded on an island with only one book.

You have the choice of either the Bible, or the best survival guide available.

Which should you choose to take?

What an unfortunate question for the theologian to ask...makes we wonder what the theologian is trying to accomplish.

It is a non sequitur for a realistic answer imho.

This isn't really a debate question of what is right or wrong, more an opinion and how a person thinks.

    Which would you choose?

    Why

I'd tell him I'd take the Survivalists Bible Version (and might throw in "with apocrypha" to throw him off a little.)

In answer, seriously, I'd tell him I know some Bible, but I'm not up too much on survival techniques, so I'd take a survival manual.

    - or -

I never travel without a Bible, so, just in case, I'm going to look for a compact Survival guide, just in case.

    - or -

If he is along for the journey, I'd let him eat those green shiny leaves first, and then wait a day or two before I try them.

    - Peace

Since Christ is in my heart, I'd take the survival guide.

If it's God's intent to take me, the book I chose won't matter. I'll be with Him and know all I need to know.

If it's God's intent that I survive, the guide may be the map He wants me to follow. So that when rescued, I'd have more time to study His word, till He calls me home.

I would say "well now that I know I'll be stranded, I'll stay at home thank you." Problem solved. :tongue3:

    It's sort of a loaded question...anyways...I'd take neither...give me a survival knife...

I'd opt for the survival guide. I don't have large chunks of that memorized... :saint:

Bonnhofer made it a habit of memorizing not only Scripture but also hymns. When he was in prison and the Nazi's finally took his books he was still able to lead praise sessions and preach. His ministry continued to give him strength, impact prisoners, and even reached some of the guards.

I don't have that good of a memory. I'd take the survival book and trust God to bring His truth to mind as I needed it.

    I'd take the survival guide.

If God wants to speak to me and I don't have a Bible, I'm quite sure He could figure a way around it.

To see if the candidate will automatically answer with what he thinks the theologian wants to hear - the Bible. A "yes" man. IMHO, the why is more important than the which in the context of the question being asked.

Moses didn't need a Bible for God to speak to him. Neither did Noah, Abraham, or thousands of others.

I, on the other hand, can not build a fire or a hut, do not know which berries and plants are edible and which are poisonous. Needless to say, I'd take the survival guide in a heartbeat, no second thoughts, no questions asked.

Forget the books. Let me have a knife, 20ft of cord, and a tarp.

I would get the Rambo survival guide, the one with his knife and M60 included with each purchase!

A book on how to make a boat from things you would find on an island.
