Political Parties and Sin

I'd say it's a sin if a Christian doesn't vote. While there may not be a "perfect" candidate in that Christian's mind, to, therefore, refuse to vote at all is, in essence, IMHO to vote for absolutely the worst candidate there is.

Down through the years there have been countless numbers of men and women who've sacrificed their lives in order to preserve this precious right that we as Americans have. To not exercise one's right to vote does very little to honor the sacrifices of those brave men and women.

 

Disagree - I would rather not vote than vote for those who would support the killing of children.

Those great heroes also died for the right not to vote.

 

To consider voting for something, voting for someone, or voting at all a matter of sinfulness is an abrogation of orthodox hamartiology and a complete misunderstanding of sin.

 

I daresay that our greatest sin in the political realm is violating the commandment of 1 Timothy 2:1-3.

 

:applause: Absolutely right. Which is why I preached on that very thing when Obama was sworn in.


How you vote, or don't vote, is a matter of conscience and personal choice.

The sin is in how we live under those authorities that God ordains and whether or not we pray for them.

 

The motivation in voting matters.

A federal official must put his or her hand on the Bible and swear before God and country to defend and uphold the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. The Constitution, therefore, binds the official to the parameters and roles allotted. The Founding Fathers implemented this requirement for office for good reason, because they wanted to maintain the integrity of the Constitution. It used to be that oaths were serious matters--especially before God.

Because God has strong language regarding oaths in the Bible, especially before Him (Lev 5:4-5; 19:12; Num 30:2; Deu 23:21-22; 1 Kings 2:43; Neh 10:29; Psa 76:11-12; Ecc 5:4-5; Eze 16:59; Zec 8:16-17; Mat 5:33-37; 23:16-22; James 5:12), understanding the requirements of the Constitution must be essential for both the voter and a candidate for office. The candidate must intend to keep the vow, and the voter must intend that the vote is in favor of it.

However, too many Christians intentionally vote for candidates that they know will violate the Oath of Office. In fact, their reasons for voting for a particular candidate are exactly because the candidate will do things that will violate the Oath, because they believe the candidate has to do these things despite the Constitution. This is WRONG!

America is not a pure democracy. We are not electing dictators. People should not be voting in such a way that they expect a person to do what they want. There is a Constitution--the supreme law of the land--that has checks and balances, and there are things that a President CANNOT do under the Constitution. There are things that a congressperson CANNOT do.

If you know that a candidate could care less about the Constitution and obviously intends to do things that violate it, you should not vote for him or her. Period. If you have an idea of how you want things to be, and your solution would be at odds with the Constitution, and you purposefully vote for a candidate because that candidate promises to do what you want, SHAME on you! In doing so, you disregard God and His Word!
