Would it matter to you IF the Study Bible had Liberal Annoited Notes or Not?

Do you care if the study notes are examples of critical scholarship or not?

Is it more important the version?

This question has been asked and answered before.

What is "Liberal Annoited" anyways? Did the "Liberal" scholar pour oil over his/her computer as they wrote them? What is it?

    perhaps I posted it wrong!

Was asking IF one feels that most important item in a bible would be translation, even IF the study Bible were liberal, critical, and just palin bad as regards the bible that its commenting on?

What is that? Sarah Palin? Spell check is your friend.

Why would one spend the money of a study Bible if the study materials were ungodly or a left wing bias?

I library near here was having a used book sale. I found a "study" Bible of the liberal kind for 50 cents. I actually think that I paid too much for the Bible.

Ok? Why not just get a study Bible with those characteristics that is both the translation you want and a reliable commentary?

    Ya, think?m:BangHead::tonofbricks:

I don't care. As a point of clarification, I don't think "study Bibles" are a good thing at all. I never recommend them nor do I buy them.

So I guess the point is moot.

Example: try finding an edition of the Geneva Bible with the Bible text alone.

The Oxford SB and the Harper Collins SB are liberal. The Harper SB (by Harold Lindsell of The Bible in the Balance fame) is conservative.

I have a KJV Study Bible, published by Zondervan. In the "Preface to the King James version" it states:

That's what I read before buying it. Only to later discover in the introduction, the following:

    FWIW.....

** I already have a NIV Bible. If I had wanted a NIV "Study Bible" I would have bought one. (Or a NASB.)

** In general, I trust "editorial team" about as far as I can throw them. This may sound harsh to some. However, for about 17 years I produced documents that were under the final control of the sales & marketing department where I worked. Thus, I was often caught in the middle between the goals of originators of the materials to be published and profit driven side of the company. Again, sales & marketing had final control. Valid information was often thrown out because it may cast a negative impression on the intended customers. Don't mention xyz because it can hurt sales. :BangHead:

Actually, from what I understand, the edition that Zondervan chose to use in that Study bible is regardest as being perhaps the best edition of the KJV text available today!

I agree about the KJV text, itself. That's why I bought this particular version. My complaint is that I have a KJV Study Bible with basically NIV study notes. As I mentioned, if I wanted a NIV Study Bible, I would have bought one.

FWIW, I've just received, as a gift, "Naves Study Bible, King James Reference Edition" - Copyright 1907 by Orville J. Nave - Copyright 1978 by The Southwestern Company

I haven't had time to read the intro materials, yet. So, I don't know the basis for the study notes nor the KJV text.

Didn't they "revise the notes" to be consistent with the KJV, as they also did with NASB?

I haven't seen the NASB, so I can't comment one way or another.

And, I haven't studied all of the notes in detail. In fact, I've almost quit using them, because with the revisions they still read more like the NIV than the KJV. Wish I had some references handy. Originally started out studing the notes, underlining key points, etc. Periodically I'd encounter something that didn't "jell" with the referenced KJV passage. However, it did "jell" with the NIV version, when I read the same verses there. Enough that I went hunting through all the Intro material and encountered the points quoted earlier. Then, I understood why some things just didn't seem to fit. (Hope that makes sense.)

Please don't misunderstand. This isn't an NIV bashing post. There's a lot of good material in the study notes. My complaint is that any study guide, IMHO, should be written for the bible where it appears. A one size fits all isn't always the case, even with attempted tailoring, to make it fit.
