He Did Away With The Law
    Col. 2:14

13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;* 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;* 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.* 16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

I have included a bit of the context for the subject verse because it is so important! I am oft assaulted with this piece of heresy and it can be difficult to deal with, no matter your education level. To begin with it is essential that one be in the state of constant prayer but that is a subject for another discussion. Also it is, absolutely, essential that you surrender your daily life into the hands of the Holy
Spirit and, daily, spend no less than fifteen minutes in the study of the Word of God.

The errant idea I teach against here the idea that because the Christ fulfilled the requirements of the Mosaic Law it has passed away, is one that is prevalent with the New Testament Theology adherents and their teachers. To begin with, the Bible Jesus and His taught from disciples taught from, when we read the New Testament is composed of the first thirty-nine Books of what we, today, term, our Bible.

To begin with the very idea must be able to fly in the light of all scripture and it cannot even get past one quote, spoken by Jesus, Matt. 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Heaven must become the Key Word here because any, reasonably, studied Christian knows that Heaven will pass when God, the Creator, destroys it. When we look at the structure of this sentence we see that Jesus did not say, ¨The Heavens,¨ and for this reason He is clearly speaking of the existing spiritual realm of God! The truth of the matter is that before the Earth was, Heaven had been, forever!

Next, for this idea to be easily sold, a principal I learned from my military days, must be employed and with this I am about to upset, far to, many people! For a lie, Propaganda, to be sold it must be easily digestible. This is easily accomplished because people, as a whole, are lazy making the truth contained in the lie to be about ten percent. If ten percent of the lie sounds familiar, the rest becomes, just,k commentary, wrapped around it. This is exactly how the Revisionist sells our young people the lies told today, they have heard mom, dad and other relatives say something like that!

My point here? Neither the Ten Commandments, nor the following six hundred and three examples of Life Application of the Law are the Mosaic Law. You see, words do count and they do matter. The Ten Commandments are the Law of God, they were, twice, etched or written, in stone by the finger of God, not Moses with a hammer and chisel. The six hundred and three life applications that follow are the God Inspired words of God. Moses, arguably, was the most educated man available but, even so, he was only fortunate enough to have been called by God for the purpose.

In the, rather, gross misapplication of this verse those making the error have one point correct, it applies to the Forgiven Sinner. (v. 13) On studying verse 15 we are given to understand that the sacrifice made by has made fools out of the Powers of the Earth. Going further we see that the forgiven need never to be concerned about the judgments of other men about what they eat or drink and that they need not be concerned with some that condemn because of perceived violations of the Sabbath.

All of this ¨proof¨ texting is not required among Grounded, in the Word, Christians because they know the most widely accepted and use principal of Scripture Interpretation, ¨Don´t.¨ God has anointed men, down through the years, to translate His Word from the original languages but it has never been a requirement that the Bible be interpreted. The understanding of the scriptures is a very simple thing but that is the reason it is rejected. To understand any single verse or any group of verses all we need to do is to read the Bible! Much to the distaste of the Lost Man, the Bible is self interpreting!

Consider... God is the only Infinite Being to be found. There, therefore, can be no finite being that can ever tell anybody what God meant. It therefore fell, and still falls, to God to make Himself understood. God has done exactly that! All we must do is to read... all of it.

    Amen, brother Bill! :thumbsup::applause:
The Ten Commandments represent the heart of God and His requirements for His people. They were written on the hearts of our first parents, defaced, but not obliterated by the Fall (Gen 5:3; Rom 2:14-15); written upon tablets of stone for the Israelites, and re-written upon the hearts of believers (2 Cor 3:3; Heb 8:10-12 etc.).

All this is wonderfully adumbrated by the breaking of the original tablets (Exod 32:19) and the making of new ones (34:1). So we can say with the Psalmist, 'Sacrifice and offering you did not desire. but my ears you have pierced (cf. Exod 21:5-6); burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not require. Then I said, "Here I am, I have come- it is written about me in the scroll. I desire to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart"' (Psalm 40:6-8).

Mt. 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill." This verse is rabbi talk to mean Jesus did not come to misinterpret the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill. The religious leaders had misinterpreted the Law by ignoring the spirit of the Law.

One further thought. If the law is done away with then Psalm 1 and Psalm 119 are done away with as well. It is only the man who is saved by grace who can say, 'Oh! How I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.' It is the one whom the law no longer condemns whose 'Delight is in the law of the LORD.' The natural man hates God's law because it condemns him and is a burden to him. The redeemed man has the law written on his heart and says, 'His commandments are not grievous.'

Heb 8:13 When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.

Be careful of what you require of yourself, and more importantly, of what you claim God requires of them.

(Mat 24:35) "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

Look at the greek for heaven in your verse and in the verse mentioned above - same word, same ending. Mat 24 says it will pass away. So it wasn't talking about the domain of God in Matthew 5. It was talking about the heavens the birds fly in. It would seem odd if Christ had been talking, even hypothetically, about the eternal domain of God being destroyed (which is what you said). He might as well have said "Until God is dead".

Aside from that (just noticed this) the verse you quoted Matt 5:18 says the Law won't pass away till all be fullfilled! So its giving a time when it will pass away. The word of Christ he refers to in Mat 24:35 cannot be the law then, because he says the law will pass away.

At any rate does the following have a bearing on anything:

    (Rom 2:12) For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law;

    (Rom 3:19) Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;

(1 Tim 1:5-11) But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions. But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

So yes, The Law will be around until heaven and earth pass away - it is what the unredeemed are judged by.

(Acts 8:30-31) Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

No, you need to take a class in context and understanding? I required nothing and if you understand context you know that and have attempted to ploace a lie in mouth. Care to clarify?

I could have misconstrued your larger point, so apologies if I did so. But you did misinterpret "heaven" in Matt 5:18 which I think I demonstrated, so I did want to point that out.

If you meant that some people think because of Christ's death and resurrection we can ignore the Old Testament, then I agree, that would be heresy.

The Law was placed because of sins. It was/is our sins placed on a "billboard". The OT Saints couldn't keep, we can't keep it, and God knows that. Jesus came to fulfill the Law, to abolish it. He established the Grace Covenant in which we live now. Jesus has given us two commandments to go by now. To love thy Lord will all the heart, soul, mind, and strength. And the other is to love they neighbor as thyself. On these two, hang all the Law and Prophets.

We no longer observe the Law, in that we have to make a sacrifice for our sins, since Jesus did that for us when He died, and arose, and is now seated on the right hand of the Father.

Well, thanks for the apology, though not required. You understand where I went perfectly now and we are in agreement. I might not should have tried to grab attention with the title, it might have set you up and for that I was wrong... sorry.

Really? "Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven" (Matt 5:19). If you have a moment, take a look at this article: http://marprelate.wordpress.com/2010/10/10/a-greater-righteousness/
But if someone loves the Lord with all his heart, mind, soul and strength, why wouldn't he want to keep His commandments? Wouldn't he rather say, 'Therefore I love Your commandments more than gold, yes, than fine gold!' (Psalm 119:127)?

We certainly do not have to make a sacrifice for sins. That is the whole point of Psalm 40:6-8 which I quoted earlier. But consider the following:-

Psalm 32:1-2. 'Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity.'

Psalm 1:1-2. 'Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungody, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.'

Would you consider that these verses and their blessing might apply to the same person?

Finally, tell me then, brother, which of God's Ten Commandments do you have such an aversion to?

Look Brother, Jesus fulfilled the Law. The Ten Commandments written in stone are no longer in effect. They were written to the OT Jews. Jesus gave us two commandments, which boils down to love. We no longer have the ceremonial portion of the Law, either.

    Hebrews 8:6-13

6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

The Grace Covenant is far better than the Law, because God will never remember our sins and iniquities anymore. IOW, they won't be brought up before us ever again. Under the Law, they were remembered every year, that is why they had to do the sacrifice every year. Not so, under the Grace Covenant. The Grace Covenant is what we live by now. The Law is gone.

The sermon was good but he missed the boat when he said, "“Don’t imagine,” He says, “That this teaching of mine is replacing the Old Testament Scriptures (3)." The phrase Jesus uses there is rabbi talk to mean that Jesus did not come to misinterpret the Law but to fulfill it. The religious leaders ignored the spirit of the Law and that is how they misinterpreted it.

When a rabbi felt that a colleague had misinterpreted a passage, he would speak to his colleague about “abolishing or uprooting” the Torah. What may have been “abolishing” the Torah for one rabbi may have been “fulfilling” it for another (Bivin, Jesus' Technical Terms About The Law - Destroying or Fulfilling The Law, 2007)

To say that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Scriptures is to do more than give an apologetic answer by providing numerous Old Testament proofs and prophecies. Jesus is the completion, the fulfillment of God's redemptive activity. He was the pinnacle and climax of God's plan of salvation for mankind. Jesus established the law's true intent in His birth, in His life, in His death, and in His resurrection.

Every forum this is posted on is buzzing over it. Iḿ content to see that the Christian Community is still alert to tis issue. The fact is that no matter what anyone says, it all boils down to what Jesus said, ¨If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.¨ (John 14:15) Now this is the issue the New Testament theologian miss´. In John 1:1-3 we see that Jesus is not only God, He is the One that created everything we see as well as everything we do not see.

And so it becomes important to know what and why the Creator has done these things. And as we study we come to Mal. 3:6a and we find that God is the same today as He was yesterday and He will be exactly the same tomorrow. The Law was and remains our teacher and he, who ignores it is in deep trouble.

The Law was our schoolmaster that brought us to Christ, and that is correct. However, Grace is what places us in Christ. Moses was a "type" of the Law, in that Moses could only bring them unto the Promised Land, not into that place. The Law never could, and never will, place us in Christ.

The Law is what shows us as wicked, vile sinners, and w/o Grace, we will stay in that state. The Law can not save one lost soul.

jesus kept the Law perfectly, died to atone for my sin debt in full, and the Father justified me in full by that act of obedience!

He fulfilled ALL of the provisions/requirements of the law, per Collosians, so I am NOT now under the Law, but under Grace!

passed from death to life, from bondage of the Flesh to the law under Old Covenant, and under liberty in the Spirit under new Covenant!

now required by the Lord to abide in him and His word, to be a doer of it, but to realise that its NOT me doing it, but Christ and His HS in me, Hope of Glory!
