Gas prices are on the rise. The prediction is $4.00 - $4.50 per gallon pricing by Memorial Day weekend and then plateauing for the entire summer.

How much of an effect do you think this will have on the election? People will be reminded how lousy the economy is doing every time they go to the gas station and Republicans will be able to remind voter of the 2008 election year mantra of "Drill baby, drill!"

Obama has resisted OK-ing the Keystone XL pipeline. Do you think he will continue to reject approving this pipeline?

Elsewhere, coffee prices are going to go up dramatically as the growing season in central and south America has been affected by strange weather. So look for crazy coffee and gas prices this summer and hopefully voters will blame it on Obama!

No matter what negative things happen between now and the election the media will either tell us how great things are or will blame it on the Republicans.

The Obama kool-aid drinks will go right along with it no matter how they spin it.

That sinking feeling in my gut tells me that Obama will be elected again by the same bunch that voted him in last time.

About one week ago I went from WY to NE and gas was about 60 cents more in NE.

Oh, imagine higher fuel costs will not help the President, if it comes to that. But then again, in the past he has opened the Strategic Oil Reserves to lower costs temporarily. Even though that is not the purpose of the Strategic Reserves imagine Obama will do the same near election time if it comes to that.

And a friendly MSM will be spinning the economy in his favor regardless of gas costs as I've read.

Why should retailers charge less than consumers are willing to pay? If Americans cared more about transportation than intimidating on the freeway we could buy a great diesel car/truck with 50 HP and get 60 MPG or better at 65 MPG.

They are charging more than Americans would like to pay. Americans are so tied to their car for transportation and as a status symbol that they are willing to pay whatever it takes to keep their vehicle.

Finite resource + growing demand = rising prices.

Capitalism at work. Still it is a lot cheaper here than in most of the world.

This is a factor the administration probably sincerely worries about.

Everytime an American gets into his/her auto they look at the gas gauge.

It is the average Americans perceived measure of success/failure of the present administration, especially when the citizen is shocked at what have to pay at the pump with the price currently around $60 for the average 16 gallon sedan.

By blaming the Republicans the administration is admiting that they are powerless against them where it really hurts, the wallet.

    My opinion, of course.

They would be a lot less finite if we were drilling our own oil right here. Now wouldn't they?

EPA + Liberal Lawsuits = High Gas $.

There is nothing "Capitalist" about refusing to use your own resources.

A freind of mine who is a geologist tells me that some well are actually being repumped. In addition a lot of directional drilling is being done especially in Dickinson, ND. I can remember when we were told that all of the oil would be pumped and we would be out about the 1970s.

It will be interesting to watch. I don't see how Obama can blame this on the Republicans. I can see him trying to put blame, but most Americans will see through the ruse.

So far Obama is saying exactly what Bush said back in the summer of 2008, namely, "I'm aware of the effect that higher gas prices have on the American family", blah, blah, blah... When Bush said this he was labeled as out of touch. So far the press hasn't gone into attack mode on Obama. I did see an article stating the the payroll tax cut is going into your gas tank, rendering it a non-starter as an economic stimulus. So there is some resentment out there. I've got to believe if gas hits $4.50, which would be a new record, even the libs in the media would join in on the criticism.

So far I have that same sinking feeling but gas prices could be a pivot issue for voters. I see that Iran is talking about adding more EU countries to the list of those they won't ship oil. That will increase world wide oil prices and Obama will trot out his usual, 'let's talk about it' (non) solution, even as Republicans call for the Keystone pipeline to get approved. I really see gas prices as a box that Obama cannot get himself out of.

    >They are charging more than Americans would like to pay.

Americans would like to pay less for food, housing, airline tickets . . . which consumer products do Americans think are less than they are willing to pay? Pro sports tickets? Movies?

    >Americans are so tied to their car for transportation and as a status symbol that they are willing to pay whatever it takes to keep their vehicle.

Agreed. Most Americans are ignorant and egocentric. This can't be solved with legislation. Maybe another 10 years of over 10% unemployment will change things.

If 5 million people would move 5 miles closer to their work gas price would drop considerably.

About 2000 Reno, NV did some of that by building homes, workplaces, and businesses within walking distance of where they work, play, and live. They built the kind of homes near the workplace where people who work there would buy. etc.

A fine example of Central Planning. Stalin would be pleased. I wonder how citizens liked it?

It is a leftist's dream to have people walking to the local co-op for organically grown fruit and vegetables on a daily basis. Using a car to go to the grocery store is frowned upon.

Those I talked to did, mostly because they could walk to work and there was no traffic to deal with on their way to work.

When I was working in Finland I saw that. Most took the subway and/or train.

While I don't disagree, this can somewhat be blamed on the Republicans not giving those people someone decent to vote for.

I know people who voted for Obama last time that want to vote against him, but their complaint is "If the Repubs can't nominate anyone worth voting for, might as well vote for Obama again"

    Sad state, IMO.

Problem is..."Growing demand" isn't entirely accurate.

    Maybe you should say

Finite Resource + stable demand + increased speculation = rising prices

We aren't paying more now because demand is up. We're paying more now because the market and speculation is driving it up.

This would be a great idea if those 5 million people wouldn't take a bath on their homes.

I'm looking forward to possibly moving soon, and running my own agency about 3 streets from where I'll live. Not driving 40 miles round trip (which really isn't a lot) everyday will be great. less time on the road, less gas costs, happier Bobby Hamilton
