During the Republican primary campaign Mitt Romney has mentioned that he thinks all employers should be required to use the e-verify government program to screen prospective new hires.

What is e-verify? From the website:

E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration that allows participating employers to electronically verify the employment authorization of their newly hired employees.

    http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/us...6fb41c8596210VgnVCM100000b92ca60aRCRD#General

Is this something that you support? Should it be mandatory that employers screen prospective employees through e-verify?

Since it's against the law for employers to hire illegals, it's a no brainer.

Do it all the time, every time.

When the jobs for illegals dry up, many of them will go home.

Its adding to the size of gov't. Just prosecute companies that hire illegals.

I am not sure how it ads to the size of government. We certainly don't want to do that. It appears to be something already in use for other things. But if it does we could handle it like the budget should be. Get rid of something else in order to do this and the government doesn't grow. The EPA is a good trade or the education dept.

I am not that concerned about illegals working a job - my concern is the free give-a-way progams that are given.
When the Give-a-way's dry up - then the illegals will go home.

As far as E-verify - it does increase the size of govt. I realize that most of the work is done by computers, but you do need employees to enter the info - and you need supervisors to....

In addition - the employer must submit additional paperwork.

But is the only item for E-verify

Supposed the govt starts wanting employers to check for other things -...

    Can anyone think of anything?

This is an misrepresentation of illegals. They do come here to work and not just to get "give aways".

The E-verify system is already set up with or without any new laws for employment verification.

    OK?

Each state has ID's. It would not be that hard to train officials in a given state to recognize real ID's from other states. We already have a national ID that is used to track us, get jobs, get government aid, and pay taxes.

We don't need more laws and bigger government. We need to enforce the laws we have now. It would also be helpful if Obama would quit suing states and persecuting officers of the law for enforcing those laws.

Yes but that is just a start. All renters should also have to do it to rent to anyone, and all medical services should have to do it, and if the person does not pass it should automatically signal the police to pick them up on the spot.

It will not be long when it will be law to have a chip in the hand, to verify citizenship, where your child is, pay taxes automatically, monitor health issues, verify where you are physically on earth at any given time, etc. etc.

No one else wants a national ID card which could replace half the plastic you carry around?

Isn't e-verify yet another example of government regulation and burdensome hoops that businesses must jump through?

But if the government program and regulation addresses an issue near and dear to a conservative's heart, in this case illegal immigration, then it's OK to have another government program and more regulations and red tape. Funny how that works.

You could also see this attitude in the gas price threads. People were advocating that the government disallow oil from being exported from the U.S. in order to keep gas prices down.

Even though they currently have no way to verify immigration status?

You can't have it both ways.

Most illegals are found out because of anonymous tips given by employees to the INS.

    Can't have it both ways?
An employer could contact e-verify and hire someone known to have a false SSN#. It would be like having a slave.

An illegal immigrant can buy a fake green card for $25, a fake SSI card for $25 and use them to obtain employment. If employers are already checking these (phoney) documents E-verify shouldn't be much of an additional burden. E-verify may not the best answer, but since this administration has blocked states from taking any initiative on their own, it leaves few options.

Then they could, and should , be prosecuted. Without a way to verify immigration status, prosecution is persecution.

I work for a large multi-national firm and we must verify before hiring. SOP.

That being said, I have hired a number of persons, as have other managers, who are obviously "just off the boat" and yet they verify easily. Not sure how, or what they are doing behind the scenes, but as long as they pass the requirements they are eligable for hire.

They are often great workers, BTW. Highly motivated compared to regular Americans who, seemingly, have lost most of their work ethic. I have had several Cuban hirees who I would PAY to hire again, not because they allowed me to abuse them as a boss, but because the better I treated them on the job the more they worked -- and that of their own accord -- not because I demanded it of them. Muy bueno amigos!

No Bilwald, I don't want a national ID card. We are getting awfully close in this country already to having to carry our "papers" around before we can move from one place to another. To often we are tracked hither and yon. Guess what? This what the communists did for years to try and control their citizens. I don't want that here. This sort of thing is why I don't support Alabama's new immigration law. I shouldn't have to continually prove my citizenship.

I have the original copy of my birth certificate. Guess what? it is worthless. Before I can renew my driver's license, according to this law, I have to prove I'm a citizen again. To do that, I have to send to Michigan for a CERTIFIED copy my birth certificate, because the original, hand writen for the most part in 1964 isn't good enough. It doesn't have a stamp.

I understand illegal immigration is a problem, but its less of a problem than making good little communists out of the rest of us.

They have auditors, public law enforcement, DA's, etc, use them...and like ITL stated, most cases of fraud are reported by colleagues.
