Because it was only a few weeks at the most between Whitney Houston's death and the news yesterday about the passing of Davey Jones, from the Monkees, I couldn't help but watch the news coverage and scratch my head as to why one musical star got tons of air time coverage (even the lowering of the flags to half mast by her home-state governor) while Jones got maybe 20 seconds.

And then it hit me like a ton of bricks (cocaine bricks that is) as to what may have been behind the huge disparity. Could it be that one was a celebrity well-known for her use of illegal drugs, marital problems and trouble with the law? While Jones spent his life in an uneventful manner, for the most, free from anti-social behaviors, and other news making antics.

If this is the reason behind the media disparity, it is a social travesty, because drug and alcohol abuse trumps living a clean life. What kind of message does that send to the youth in our society? :tear::tear::tear:

Seriously. Does this deserve an answer?

Whitney Houston won two Emmy Awards, six Grammy awards, 30 Billboard Music awards. She had seven consecutive number 1 hits on the Billboard 100 charts. Her song, "I Will Always Love You" is the best selling single by a female vocalist in music history. She sold over 170 million records. I could go on and on with her accomplishments.

In contrast, Davy Jones, as a member of the Monkees had 3 number one songs and the group sold 65 million records.

Could be as simple as "What have you done lately?"
Whitney MUCH more known and remembered, her problems front page stories, while Davey was out of sight and mind!

Good news for Whitney was based upon what was said about her, was a devout Christian who chose to gey "messed up", thank God all of us to varying degrees mess up after saved, and its by His grace we are saved!

Probably, they were a band and they had their own show.

More like they had a TV show and formed a band. I remember watching the show when I was in grade school. They basically pioneered the music video. My older sister had the single 45 with "I'm a Believer" on it and played it, and played it, and played it, and played it, and played it....

The Beatles were known as the Fab Four. These guys were known as the "Prefab Four" because a record company or TV show producers put them together instead of them forming the band and coming up the hard way. I used to love watching their reruns as a kid in the early 80s. They were one of those 1960s rerun shows that aired frequently in the afternoon on the smaller independent TV stations.

Having said that, The Monkees put out some really great hits, but Houston's resume' blows theirs out of the water. I'm assuming it's a "Boomer" thing with thinking Jones' death was bigger.

You are exactly right. No need to sensationalize this and make it into something it isn't.

Not long ago and a couple of miles from me, a beautiful lady went to be with the Lord. She was a beautiful lady in every sense of the word. Her love of people and of the Lord was apparent to all who saw her.

Yet, when she was called home, there was a small obit in the local newspaper. Only the small group (relatively speaking) of her friends and family noted her passing.

In the wake of the "national mourning" of the loss of an "icon" following the death of Michael Jackson, I've had many thoughts similar to yours, Dude. The Godly woman I knew passed away with little notice. As has so many others.

Yet, the bigger the "name", regardless of the publically known sin(s) in their lives, the more special coverage their passing receives. The day the news broke about Whitney, the morning news show anchors that I watched were dressed in sackcloth and ashes. As with other icons, especially in the entertainment industry, media emphasis would be on-going for days. The only way to get away from it was/is to hibernate. Turning off the TV isn't enough, as it's also the big topic of conversation on the streets, as well.

Will there be tributes to Whitney a year from now? If memory serves, there were for Jackson. A year from her death, how many outside of her immediate family will remember the lady mentioned earlier?

If today's media had existed 2,000 years ago, what kind of coverage would have been given to Jesus when He died on the cross? Would there have been anything at all? Perhaps a brief orbit in the local news outlet, as with the lady. Or, ......... ???

It is a social travesty! Living or dead "idols", the media's sending the wrong message to our youth with their coverage. Some may remember when Clay Aiken from NC was on American Idol. Local attention to him was a feeding frenzy and grew to a fever pitch during the finals. Even at church, he was THE TOPIC OF CONVERSATION before Bible study classes started.

Only later, after this TV show milked the public for all it was worth, was it revealed that he is gay. How many young people will condone his lifestyle because the media made him an Idol?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessing it was to meet the beautiful lady who's in my thoughts this morning. Seeing her smile is a treasure to bring back to mind, as the world turns its focus to the next idol that comes along. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen

"I Will Always Love You"----was NOT Houston's song------song was written by Dolly Parton in tribute to her mentor---Portar Wagner-----later on after the song's release---Elvis Presley attempted to buy the song's "Rights" from Dolly----to which Dolly refused to sell----good move by Dolly-----everytime the song was sung by Houston---Dolly put $$$$$$$$$$'s in her little purse!!!!!!!
    :thumbs::thumbs:
Just sayin'------Houston sang a "Borrowed" song that made the song's owner filthy rich!!!!!!!!!
