I've been thinking about this a lot recently- the Republicans have a stranglehold on the South in Presidential elections. There are exceptions, to wit, President Obama carried North Carolina, Florida, and Virginia in 2008. However, I would like to see Mr. Obama once again carry those states, plus places like South Carolina, which is the only other state in which I've lived, Mississippi, and Alabama.

Democrats have a solid advantage among black voters. There are a lot of black folks in the South, so that's a start. So my question, as a fifth-generation native-born white Floridian, is how can Democrats spread their message of hope and change among white Southerners?

Of course, we know progressive white Southerners exist; I'm living proof of that. I love to eat grits, drink sweet tea, and I even own a Confederate flag, which sits neatly folded in my closet. I'm a descendent of a Confederate veteran, one branch of my family has lived in Florida since the 1800s and my Mommy's side of the family is from Alabama. My Hispanic grandmother is from WAY down south. I'm all of those things and I'm a far-left democratic socialist ideologue. What I'm wondering is how we can have more people like me.

We don't want more people like you Paul. You are asking all the wrong questions in all the wrong places. Head over to democratic underground and you'll be right at home!

I've lurked on Democratic Underground, but I've never joined. BTW, last time I checked this forum is for Baptists, not just conservative Baptists. I'm a Baptist, so I'm right at home here!

As an aside, there is a glimpse of hope for a progressive South right here in Jacksonville- Alvin Brown is mayor.

I agree 100%. This is the most unreported story of this year, the South in play in November. With a very high black population, and a low regard for Romney by the conservatives, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, and South Carolina are in play. This would have been unheard of a few months ago. I do not want Obama to win, and would not vote for him. However, with equal intensity, I would not vote for Romney. I lived in Gulfport growing up, and feel this is very possible.

Congrats to Rick Santorum on his wins in Mississippi and Alabama.

This would be the irony of the last one hundred years. I am not an Obama fan, but think when you hear this in November. "NBC news projects Barack Obama has carried Mississippi and Alabama." Poor George Wallace has got to be turning over in his grave. LOL

The South you describe is very recent. Traditionally, they went Democrat, and that mostly because Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Yes, I 've had southerners TELL me that.

They are finally drifting rightward because the Democrat Party is mostly supporting the people that the white ciizens of that area think little of -- blacks and other minorities. Poor reasons to shift allegiance indeed, and why the states are always in play by the Democrats.

I grew up in Mississippi in the 50s and 60s, and am quite aware of what the south was like during those years. I can remember the Democrats of old being the only party. I can also remember legalized man's inhumanity to man. It is a vivid memory to observe for a young child. It is the subject of another thread. Looking at the party alignment today, it is the ultimate irony that the Democrats of the south were the party that enforced segregation and all the evils that went with it.

I was born in Virginia and lived in North and South Carolina, plus in Kentucky. Wisconsin is my home and where I am most politically savvy, but I do get some things about southern politics.

Recently, I was able to spend some time with a friend in Ridgeland SC (just inland from Hilton Head). I was SHOCKED to see the way that segregation still existed. No tourist or casual passer-by would ever really see the real world in the deep south unless he lived there or got exposed in some other way. I saw two main differences from the slavery that I had only read about -- a paycheck at the end of the week and no beatings were administered. Otherwise, the blacks still lived in the slave quarters or in obviously "lesser" housing while the whites lived in the "big house." Sevants abound. Seperate churches, stores, communities, "other side of the tracks" means something, etc. Purely shocking.

Small world, since leaving Gulfport, I have lived in McCracken County KY for thirty five years. My son, who is a computer engineer, lives in Madison, WS and works for a company called EPIC.

My most vivid memory as a child, which really we should start another thread over this, but it infuriates me every time I think about it, is the back of the bus policy. I can remember a city bus picking me up to go downtown. I was very young. On the bus, many black people were gathered in the back sitting and standing. There were many empty seats on the front of bus. What I will never forget is sitting in a seat, turning around to look with all those empty seats around me, and having eye contact with an elderly black woman standing in the aisle with a cain. That was the moment, even at eight or ten years old, I knew the whole system was nothing but evil. I could go on and on.

My understanding is that the reason Southerns went Democratic was not because of Lincoln - but due to the Republican led Reconstruction in which carpetbaggers attempted to rule the South by force as punishment.
At the surrender at Appomattox, Gen Grant allowed men to keep horses and side arms. In addition Grant ordered that rations be provided for the newly surrendered Confederates - who now were once again fellow countrymen.
Lincoln was of the same persuasion. There is a theory that Republican leadership wanted to punish the South - and that was the reason Lincoln was assassinated.

So Paul, you have no problem with abortion? You have no problem with socialism? You have no problem with programs such as Cash for Clunkers, green energy sweetheart loans, and ect.....

How can the Democrats spread their message of hope and change? They need to do exactly what the Republicans need to do, nominate people who are conservative, have a basis of their agenda the Constititution, and have a desire to serve instead of take.

The message of Marxist socialists parading as the American Democrats is always the same at its core. We're right, but we haven't found the correct combination of perfect leaders, nor have the people followed us correctly as yet.

Pray to God that the people never do follow them, and for the record, they will NEVER find the correct combination of perfect leaders for there are no perfect leaders who will work to insure tyranny and enslavement of the people.

It's not going to happen if the Democratic Party runs on issues and it's not going to happen of they run on Obama's personality.

The best way to do it would be to appeal to party. Run lots of ads showing past Democrat leaders of the south and stress that Obama is a Democrat. Stress the tradition of Democrats running the south. Have slanted TV commercials denigrating Republicans. Use innuendo and falsehoods to show Democrats = Good; Republicans = Bad.

This is going to be the most vile and hateful political election in America's history.

The Democrats cannot run on their stance, their attitude, their future plans, nor their effectiveness, so they won't. They will simply run on "HATE REPUBLICANS."

My prediction is that the "ZERO" will re-occupy the dictators throne once more come next Jan.
IMHO, God is in the process of diminishing the influence of this country so as to pave the way for the AC; and re-electing the ZERO" will be a darn sure way to accomplish this.
I really am hoping for another massive "great awakening", but that can happen in spite of the "ZERO",; or maybe even because of him.
So, in line with the OP, the South just may go for the pied piper this go-round, as it's obvious that some can be duped into believing anything promised.
All I can say is "--may God have mercy on the innocent."

There is always a point where God says enough is enough and lets a nation or a group of people go on their merry way, as in the case of King Saul. We have never been so blessed as any nation, and not only do we sin, we rub God's nose in it with making abortion and gay marriage the law of the land. We have a choice of Obama and Romney. I do not believe it could get more ungodly. Two pro abortion, gay rights, non-Christian candidates presented to the American people for election of President of the United States. The more immediate cause is Republicans lowering their standards over the decades with an ever increasing liberality until we have the ultimate match to Obama. We as a nation had plenty of chances to elect decent leaders since 1988, and have failed to do so. The only chance left for this election is someone to become the Republican nominee who is not Romney.

The "solid south" will remain solid for this election, even if they have to hold their nose and vote.

Having lived in Mississippi into adulthood, I doubt that very much. They will hold their nose to a point (McCain), but they will not tolerate a pro abortion, pro gay rights Mormon.
