I think it will be a waste of money & manpower, and it will never succeed.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/joshbarro/2012/03/15/santorum-promises-broad-war-on-porn/

....Some of Santorum’s defenders have taken the tack of separating his personal views from his policy views. Santorum thinks contraception is “not OK” and he has announced his intention to use the bully pulpit to discuss “the dangers of contraception.” But he doesn’t think contraception should be illegal, and he voted for Title X contraception subsidies (though he said in a recent debate that he opposes Title X, despite voting for it.) On pornography, though, Santorum’s views can’t be written off as purely personal—he has stated a clear intent to use the levers of government to stop adults from making and watching porn.

He's playing up to Christians. He knows how much we all like to try and control other's private lives through government force.

Yes that is why there are dozens of Christians replying to the post clamoring to agree with Rick. Let's see, 1, 2...

Actually it is nations such as China and Iran who work hardest to restrict internet porn and broadcast TV. In the US I think we have given up on the idea.

And why is that? I'm not disagreeing with you, but prompting a discussion of why?

I think we - as Americans - have given up on a lot of things that we shouldn't have. Why?

The government already puts limits on porn - kiddie porn for example.

So any disagreement with Santorum can't be on principle.

Are cost and difficulty of enforcement then the only objections?

If cost and difficulty of enforcement are legitimate reasons not to ban porn then why not go the whole way and say that any and all porn is allowed?

Any time, any place, any medium - it should all be ok without restriction then.

Tell where I am wrong in my analysis.

That's the only example I could think of.

Kiddie porn has to victimize in order to create a product. Adults in the business are old enough to enter into legal contracts. So my objection to it is based on a principal. Restriction on age, or local obsenity laws wouldn't be touched.

That, and the war would lose.

Has the war on drugs been effective, or has the money been ill-spent, rife with corruption and cronyism ? Have we eliminated drugs, or have we just spent a lot of money putting users in jail while the big international cartels get richer & richer ?

Same with the war on poverty. And terrorism. They bring a loss of liberty, labled as a "necessity". And people can see the problem get worse.

Why don't we just declare a war on all manner of sin, and try to eliminate it all ?

Yes, child pornography victimizes to create the product, but adult pornography also victimizes as a by-product.

The death rate - whether by suicide, AIDS, murder, drug abuse, and more - among porn stars is outrageous. While families and marriages are certainly victims of adult pornography - the men and women who make the images are many times victims of their own industry in a way like no other industry.

While a "war on porn" may not be the answer - our country has got to come up with something.

I know about the deaths by AIDS and suicides, yet do not consider them "victims" on any comparable level to children.

I am against creating Government agencies set up to protect people from their own decisions.

What should be done is what we've always done, strive to change hearts.

We will never eliminate pornography, and will bankrupt ourselves trying.

You are correct in that we will never eliminate pornography, but we will never eliminate all murders or robberies either.

So, should we also stop funding concerning all moral crimes such as murder?

I believe that to be more of a by-product of restricting EVERYTHING the people of those countries have access to.....

In China the people are very much left alone by the government as long as they do not engage in anything that is viewed as political. The Chinese government is very repressive when it comes to political actions. They also come down hard on drug dealers. In 1986 while in Kunming we heard, from a Chinese guide, that two men were caught smuggling drugs into China. A few days later we read in the English China Daily that two men were executed in Kunming. Guess who? Swift justice or injustice depending on how you view this type of activity.

The Chinese people have access to just about anything you can think of, especially consumer products. The Internet is censored as it is considered political. Criticism of the government is not tolerated ... that is also viewed as political.

The CCP's main interest is preserving itself and its power. They do not seem to care much about other areas.

I am not sure how much they control pornography. They certainly do not attempt to limit copyright violations; i.e. movies, books, software, etc.

Pornography is illegal in China. Look it up. It appears you don't know what you are talking about.

...Beijing’s war against pornography is infamous for producing an inordinate amount of collateral damage. For the most part, the casualties of the government’s efforts to crack down on porn, which is illegal in China, are non-pornographic websites that get swept up in periodic campaigns against “harmful” online content.
Despite the sledge-hammer strategy, sex scholar Katrien Jacobs says in an interview published Tuesday by the Web magazine Danwei, China’s guardians of public morality are losing, badly:...

China blocks Google over porn, again

"Some Google websites, including the popular search engine, were blocked by Chinese authorities today as Beijing expressed unhappiness with Google serving up porn in its search results.

The issue has long been a contentious one between the company and the country. Google said last week that it would block pornography on its Google.cn site, but Chinese censors said porn was still accessible through Google.com."

We can take that for what it's worth.

And non-porn sites have been swept up in the madness. No thanx.

I guess because we no longer have standards that the majority can live with. My own thinking is that educators and the entertainment industry are changing everything. For the last 40 years at least. Politics has very little to do with it IMO

I already posted how China's losing it's war. You cannot enforce unenforcable laws.

I was thinking in terms of the so called war on drugs. I've argued against it here on numerous occasions only to be told that drugs should be illegal and we should keep spending millions, billions (?) on a losing battle. Just the other day a story broke out of California. The legalization of marijiuana was shot down because of greed and police/government job security.

No moral argument was involved. Just greed and job security. I imagine the same would apply to a war on porn. A few would get richer and many would end up in the private prison system which also has lobbyists in Washington to make sure the number of inmates in those prisons remains high. "Tough on crime" = BIG BUCKS for a select few and misery for many.

It's all about money. The people running this country care nothing for our safety and well being. They care only about three things. Money, power and control. Speaking of control I'm about to post another breaking story that the corporate mass dream media has totally ignored.
