The KJV version uses a certain word that can be translated to cereal and not vegetables. However the NIV, ESV, and even the NKJV use the word vegetables. So tell me what was it cereal or vegetables in Daniel 1?

Daniel 1:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

The KJV uses the word "pulse".

    Strongs:
    zeroa` zay-ro'-ah
or zeraSon {zay-raw-ohn'}; from 2232; something sown (only in the plural), i.e. a vegetable (as food):--pulse.

    Where are you getting cereal?

Well Sissy did ask, "Where are you getting cereal?". She stepped into that one. Unless she takes a sickle, and sneeks into someone's wheat field, and gets the wheat, and then processes it herself, where else can she get it?

    PULSE

puls (zero'-im (Dan 1:12 margin, "herbs"), zere'onim (Dan 1:16); compare zerua`, "sowing seed" (Lev 11:37), and zeru'im, "things sown" (Isa 61:11)): (1) In Dan 1:12,16, it must mean herbs or vegetables grown from seeds; a vegetable diet is what is implied. (2) In 2 Sam 17:28, "pulse" after "parched" is not in the original, but is probably more correct than the translation in (1), as "pulse" usually implies leguminous plants, peas, beans, etc.

    Pulse
Daniel 1:12; Daniel 1:16, zeronim, edible "seeds" or grain of any kind, barley, wheat, millet, vetches. Leguminous seeds roasted are still used in the East (compare 2 Samuel 17:28). Gesenius explains "vegetables grown from seeks, in general." http://www.bible-history.com/faussets/P/Pulse/

    Pulse
(Dan. 1:12, 16), R.V. herbs," vegetable food in general."

    Pulse [N] [E]
(seeds ) usually means peas, beans and the seeds that grow in pods. In the Authorized Version it occurs only in ( Lamentations 1:12Lamentations 1:16 ) as the translation of words the literal meaning of which is "seeds" of any kind. Probably the term denotes uncooked grain of any kind, as barley wheat, millet, vetches, etc.

Thanks for this. This tells me that my commentary may be incorrect on this one.

Daniel's Meal Plan for Sunday, March 18th, 539 BC

Breakfast - Coco Puffs and Captain Crunch

Lunch - Campbell's Lentil Soup and Wonder Bread (builds body's 12 ways)

Dinner - Vegetarian Chilli or Buddhist Delight

    Snack - Power bar

Daniel had a wide range of food to eat and wasn't deprived.
Even today we would say a properly regulated vegetarian diet is healthy
