When all is said and done, we know that there is only one goup of people that shall have Eternal Life given them. Listen to the words of my Blessed Saviour Jn 17:2

2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

To as many as the Father hath given Christ !

8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

They that have believed that Christ was sent to be our savior. Those who believe have eternal life, and those were predestinated because of God's foreknowledge of the choice they would make.

    The whosoever wills.

All have opportunity. But only those who choose Christ are given the gift of eternal life.

    Praise God.

There is no objective test for the spiritual state of "being saved." God does not provide a list of the elect.

DO BAPTISTS TEACH that God "elects" on the basis of his foreknowledge? Or is "election" retroactive? Or a crap shoot?

DOES "inviting Jesus" or saying any prayer obligate God to "save" a person?

CAN a saved person become unsaved?

IS this one class of people or two classes of people????????

Those whom the Father hath given Him are the same as the Sheep that God hath given Him and to whom He gives Eternal Life to notice:

    Jn 10:27-29

27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

    29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all;

That is circular and does not identify anyone. For example, Mormons think they are following God/Jesus.

The little epistle of First John was written so that one can know they have been born of God and are children of God.

After the introduction John begins with what I believe is one of the most explicit evidences of a true child of God - they are conscious of their own personal condition of sinfulness before a holy God. (1 Jn. 1:8-10).

Those who deny this fundemental are not true children of God no matter how loudly they proclaim themselves to be.

1 Tim. 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

Paul said this near the end of his life. Note he uses the present tense "AM."

AGREE! Only people who do continuing good works, who try to love God and be good neighbors can know that they are saved. Thus pragmatically good works are a requirement for salvation.

What about people who try to love God and be good neighbors but don't care if they are saved? Shouldn't they get double credits for their good works?

You have got it right up to the period in the last sentence above. The critical words are "can know." However, in the next sentence below you make a theological leap from how one "can know" to draw an entirely different conclusion to what one must do in order to be saved

No, pragmatically good works are a requirement so that you "can know" you ARE saved.

You jumped from "can know" to "requirement for salvation" to good works are simply good enough. The problem is your jump from "can know" to "requirement for salvation."

Doesn't it take more than just belief?

I know Wiccans, convicts and drunks that claim to believe that Jesus is our savior, but they still refuse to commit to Him and His teachings.

Are they saved by mere belief? Or does it also take commitment? And if so, would that commitment be considered a work?

It seems that this conversation always leads to just as many questions as it does answers.

What if being sinners though, and unable by themselves to come to the saviour, how could God see them coming to faith in jesus if they cannot do that?

How would God use that basis to save us?
