HCSB Study Bible

I really like the HCSB as a version to read and study from, and based upon just skimming through the Bible at a bookstore, looks like a good Study Bible...

Notes seem to be similiar to those in the Niv study bible ....

have you read/used the HCSB, as per the OP?

 

The study Bible? No, but I do have a copy of the translation.

 

I have a digital version of the HCSB Study Bible on my iPad, I got it a week or so ago because my Pastor was saying good things about it. The notes seem pretty good, but I haven't really dove deep into though.

 

I have a copy of the HCSB Study Bible. It has very good notes and I like the HCSB translation. :thumbsup:

 

Pretty good notes, and I like the layout and use of color all through it.

Only problem is it is one heavy book!

 

I am not the biggest fan of the HCSB translation in general (not bad, just not at the top of my preferred list). BUT - from what I have looked at thus far, the study notes are very good. And as I posted in another thread regarding study Bibles - one of my former seminary professors did a few of the Bible book study notes in the HCSB.

 

I have it since it came from the printer. I like the introductions ant the notes. But the index it not very good compared to my Scofield and my Thompson. Actually I do not use it very much because the lack of a good index.

 

I am not a fan for any of Modern Versions, but if I am requested to choose one only among MV's, I would choose HCSB, becasuse

- it is relatively accurate in many translations.
- it reflected many points from Majority Texts.
- its colloquial English is even better than NIV in that aspect.

It is much much better than NIV, NASB, NLT, ESV, etc.

 

I prefer the NKJV.

 

Would say that best english version for JUST serious studies would be the NASB, as it follows the greek text closest, at least the critical text!

IF one wants to use more MT/TR texts, would say NKJV superior to use than KJV...

Niv 2011/Hcsb are also good to use for genral reading, and more casual study...

 

Of course, NKJV is still better than any MV's.

I didn't count it as one of MV's, though it is considerably deviated from KJV.

I believe NKJV still remains with TR-MT Ben Chayyim though it reflected BHS some how.

NKJV is not so much colloquial as HCSB.

Arthur Farstad was the same chief translator for both NKJV and HCSB, I think.

If you know the original languages and compare any MV's to the original texts, you will find too many errors.

 

It had to deviate from the KJV in order to obtain copyright protection.

I've read somewhere (wish I still had the link) that the first draft (my words) didn't contain enough changes to receive a copyright. Thus, more changes for compliance with copyright rather than because God's word actually needed to be changed. Further, from what I understand, the notes and commentary align more closely with the sources used by most modern versions. Thus, casting doubt on the scriptures themselves.

 

The HCSB is an excellent modern translation. For a primary study bible for believers not trained in the original languages, I would recommend the NASB95 that I use. However, I also read and compare the passage of study using the NKJV, the NIV, the ESV, and the HCSB. If there is a doctrinally significant difference, then I am driven into a study of the actual Greek words (from the CT, not TR) and add the NET with its apparatus.

To base ones knowledge of God's Word upon a single translation, no matter that it is the best available, is unsound. And besides sometimes the KJV actually hits the nail on the head.

 

Agree with what you posted here, and do think its best to contrast/compare 2-3 good versions while study of the Bible!

And IF able to do such, go into Greek for more insight in those "problem passages!"

just curious to how the HCSB would have turned out IF kept to using Greek majority text instead of the CT?
